Would this be good for a cross country race? Meaning, would the splits work to secure the racers' times?

I think so- I haven't used it this way, but I have used it to time a distance race at a track meet. I used the split feature to store all 15 runners' times without any problems. You may want to try using this feature at practice before the race- it seems pretty straight forward, but I think it's helpful to get comfortable using the split feature ahead of time! I'm planning to use my watch for Cross Country in the fall, too!

When time is running, and you hit the lap/split/reset button, does it record that first lap and start from 0 again while continuously going?

it will record laps up to 99 then go to 0 and keep going until you hit stop. The reset function only works with the watch stopped. lap or split depends on which mode you choose.

Can someone please tell me if the buttons are smooth-pressing, or do they snap/click when you start and stop the watch? Thanks!

The do have a click and a beep when any button is pressed.

does this item come with a neck strap?

Yes it come with a cord. I wrap it around my wrist when walking/running and hang it around my neck at other times. Hope this helps

I bought two of these stopwatches in order to keep track of diving operations when I am serving as the supervisor. They work great for this purpose, and I am sure they would work great for normal stopwatch use. The 3 row display is very helpful, most cheaper watches only have 2 rows. The size of the display and the contrast is good, I can see them even when wearing polarized sunglasses. The ability to switch from split to lap time (and back) is outstanding; you can switch back and forth while the watch is running. The recall feature is very good and helps me recall times of certain dive aspects when needed. The watches are easy to use, and the instructions are pretty good. I also appreciate they are water resistant. Overall, I would definitely recommend them.
