You can check the output of the controller and see what the voltage is. Should be no more than 15 Volts DC at most ... if it's higher, you have a problem that should be corrected. You may have a higher voltage directly off the panel without the controller. Mine in bright sunlight can get as high as 20 Volts DC. Again ... a working controller should prevent you from frying your battery.
