My 9 pocket hi vis only has one stud fastener on each of the lower big pockets! Hope this helps.

Does this vest have side insert pockets that i can put my hands in to keep warm?

Yes, it is got both side pocked and top pocket too. Be carefull the size, general L = medium vest. like my size L and ordered L and was way too big.

It's not suitable for a smart phone unless it's the size of a Nokia 6310, which is about the size of the pocket.
