I think it sort of builds a barrier on their skin so they can heal, as well as protect them from further burning/irritating from toileting. It's an expensive cream, however you only need a tiny amount and it spreads out thinly (your instructed to use a small amount too and be able to see the baby's skin through it) It's great.
