Floating Cloud Japanese Maple Acer palmatum Ukigumo 2 - Year Tree

So, when some people read a 1 year or 2 year plant on these grafts I think in their mind it is a huge plant, but here is the important bit to take from that, in this case it is a Ukigomo Floating Cloud Japanese Maple, that is important because this species does not show variegation (the coloring that people like so much) until about 2 years.Like I said the thing to take away from the graft being from a 2-year plant is that when your leaves grow and your tree starts to grow you do not have to wait 2 years to see if its even the right maple! lol... it does not mean it is a huge plant, typically sample plant pics are just of adults or adolescents already displaying features (unless specified otherwise).That being said, I received mine as just a stem grown from root grafted to a 2 year branch, and though it came with no leaves attached and semi-dormant from the winter, it only took about 3 days after repotting in my own soil and putting it under a Sansi natural light (the nice 60 watt 4 prong led one) and this beautiful thing came to life.Honestly, even though it was cold weather dormant when it arrived and had no leaves the small branch grafted was still very healthy looking, and plump stemmed with pregrowth at every node, it was a good selection for grafting during the winter season, and it recovered under the light very quickly.Really just an amazing species, and I really should just talk about the species and not the graft style or supplier but this is an extremely rare species with usually only scammers selling, the one supplier on here sent me an amazing little grafted branch, and people kind of need to realize that these super rare species are worth it, and if you know what you are doing they come very viable.As for misunderstandings, its neither the species nor the sellers fault, know what you are buying, and know where you are leaving reviews. This is about a plant, a product.EDIT: added 2 more pics just about a few days to a week along, ignore the golden chain tree sapling in the background of the 2nd larger growth one (5th one total.)

I am disappoint.It's alive, but tiny for a "2-year tree." I suppose it is possible that it is a graft FROM a two year tree, but it is small enough to fit in a 1-qt container, it has one stem and a few leaves with no branches. Also the graft looks weak, like it is splitting. I'm going to plant it and see how it does, but I don't have high hopes.For the price I expected much much better. This is a $10 tree at best.

I am just over the moon with this little maple tree! I am so much more than happy! It was packaged so well that there isn't one broken branch or leaf. I never expected it to arrive with the variegated leaves after reading the description and it says that for the first 5 years or so it shows regular green leaves. It has beautiful pinks, whites and green in there. The graft was done very well. You can hardly tell it's a graft. It will blend out good as it grows for bonsai and the trunk thickens up. Overall I am extremely happy with my little tree. I certainly plan to buy from them again. I have my eye on quite a good number of their different maple trees I'd like to add to my collection already! Thank you! 🙏🏻😍🩷

Floating cloud has been the favorite of my household right out of the box.It has grown nicely and becomes more beautiful by the day. This company is not great. I ordered 3 plants and 2 of them were 2 years old or older. The 3rd.. dancing peacock was a little younger and smaller than advertised. I tried contacting the company 2x and there was no response.

I was looking forward to receiving my tree. Most nurseries that ship to the deep South don't ship during the heat of our summer. Surprisingly the tree was sent in 90+ degree weather, crunched up in a small box. All but 3 of it's leaves fell immediately. I think it is still alive. It is small, but I'm hopeful.

Awful! Tree sat in a box for 3 days before being picked up by the shipper.Arrived tiny with only 2 leaves on it. Didn’t make it through the winter.Total waste of money.

This plant was teeny tiny upon arrival - a mere twig less than a foot tall! The graft however was solid (all Japanese maples are grafted, even the big fancy nursery varieties). Moreover, it wintered over in the northern exposure where I planted it just fine, and produced leaves in the spring. Tough little fellow! This tree absolutely needs shade, and lots of it. I planted mine where it gets maybe 2 hours of filtered sun per day (good for ukigumo because without ANY sun you won't get pink margins, but too much and it will croak). The white variegation will appear in shade only, and only in soil with very low nitrogen. So never fertilize this plant, unless you want it to turn green. JM's don't like fertilizer anyway. Perhaps even more, it needs protection from wind. So find a spot with shelter. Caveat: ukigumo gets BIG. if you're up north like I am (Wisconsin) it probably won't exceed 6 ft in height, but warmer areas may be looking at a tree 15 feet tall. So give it some space, protection from sun and wind, a little acid soil - and then leave it alone. Good purchase.
