Review: A year of abuse, I'm still impressed - I don't normally write product reviews, but after my most recent hunt, these boots earned it. TLDR: buy the dang boots, you probably won't regret it. The fact you're even looking at them probably means you already need them. I recently spent about 12.5 hours on the Makaha ridgeline carrying a 40-pound pack and a 9-pound rifle. The route covered roughly 2.4 miles horizontally while gaining and losing approximately 2,365 feet of elevation. The terrain was rocky and punishing for virtually the entire trek. There were steep climbs, steep descents, and long stretches of scrambling over uneven rock. The majority of these rocks were 3 feet in height or more and had to be mantled, while many of the rock faces were 9 feet or higher and required scaling to continue along the route. The path was rarely more than 2 to 3 feet wide and, in some places, narrowed to about a foot wide. Several sections had drop-offs ranging from a few hundred feet to nearly 1,000 feet. What impressed me most about the TR102 wasn't the traction, although the traction was excellent. It was the stability. Even carrying a loaded pack and rifle, the shoes felt planted and predictable. I never felt the shoe shifting under my foot or doing anything that made me question my footing. Weight transfer felt natural, with near-zero shift under load, foot placement felt precise, and I found myself focusing on the route rather than worrying about my footing. The single biggest benefit of these shoes is the ground feel. I feel exactly what is underneath my feet. Every minute detail, every rock, every pebble, loose dirt, sand, any change in terrain is transmitted through the sole, which allows for precise foot placement and a greater awareness of the surface beneath me. Maybe I'm just a nerd but I love that feedback to my brain. I harvested a goat during the hunt and packed approximately 40 pounds of meat off the mountain. Even with the additional weight, the shoes continued to feel stable and secure the entire 2.4 mile trek back to my vehicle. What surprised me most was the complete lack of foot fatigue. After 12.5 hours of climbing, descending, scrambling, and carrying weight through technical terrain, my legs were tired, but my feet were not. The TR102 is my first minimalist shoe. I've been wearing them for about a year now, but this was my first hunt in them. I also skipped Belleville's suggested one-week transition period and went straight to wearing them full-time when I first bought them. Looking back, that probably wasn't the smartest idea, but I experienced very little discomfort during the adjustment period. Outside of hunting, I work security and spend a lot of time on my feet. These shoes always get me through entire shifts without pain or fatigue, and I've worked double shifts in them without any issues. Between daily wear, long shifts at work, and now a 12.5-hour hunt on the Makaha ridgeline with a loaded pack, these shoes have exceeded my expectations. If you're considering the TR102 and wondering whether minimalist footwear can handle demanding terrain and long days on your feet, my experience has been overwhelmingly positive. Final note, the tread life on these boots is incredible. The photos were taken after a year of hard use and abuse. If I could change one thing, it would be the coating on the leather. A more durable finish would make an already excellent boot even better. The weight is another huge advantage. I sometimes forget I'm wearing them, and then when I switch back to regular boots, my body immediately reminds me of the difference. Definitely worth every penny.
Review: Very comfortable boots! - They are as comfortable and functional as any of my street and hiking barefoot shoes I have. Which is to say, if I was interested in military style boots as everyday wear, I would have no issues wearing them every day. As it is, I wear them for 12+ hour shifts. At first, I did get the ankle bite like many people in military boots do, but that went away when I stopped tying them tight around the ankles. They haven't had any break-in period for me, but again, I have been in almost exclusively barefoot style shoes since Christmas. As for quality, I would say they are made as good as any military boot. They passed the scrutiny of my retired Marine husband. I would say they will be just as durable as any other military-style boot. I do wish the toe was rubber-wrapped, since we kneel down so much in EMS, but I will deal and just be careful so as to prevent scratching of the leather. The sole grip seems fine so far, I have been in a handful of greasy kitchens and wet floors, and they seem a bit better than my Haix and Danners were. Now that I have had them for a month or so, I can say that I really like them. For years, I was wearing Haix and Danner EMS/Wildland/Station crossover boots. I thought I loved those until I started with barefoot shoes earlier in the year. These may not have as much flexibility as true barefoots, but they have tons compared to regular boots, which is great. I will say, that like others have mentioned, sizing is a bit wonky. I am a woman and wear a women's 7.5 (men's 5.5-6)/37-38 in non-barefoot shoes, and 38 in barefoot shoes. I first got these in a 6.5 regular and they while they fit, they fit more like a regular shoe instead of barefoot. I switched to a 6.5 wide and they fit perfectly. They may actually be a little too long, but I am okay with that. Anyhoo, I am very glad I finally bought these and wish I had done it sooner!

## Questions & Answers

**Q: I saw somewhere that the heel to toe drop was only 2mm? Is this true? Is the toe box wider than normal to allow for toe splay? Or should i buy wide?**
A: Yes it is true, there is only a 2mm drop and the toe box is wider. These were true to size and are very comfortable once you get use to the drop from wearing regular shoes. I have loved my pair and have had them for about 6 months now. I wear them every day and I work as a Sheriffs Deputy. The only draw back is that with all the rain we have had lately my feet do get wet. They are not water proof or resistant, they are a jungle boot style boot, though they do dry fast. I just keep extra pair of socks with me when at work. They are very quite when walking, when clearing house's I have been able to walk through homes like a "ninja" as my son says. They are very light on your feet and yet very comfortable. You will feel each rock you step on due to the thin sole, but the lug system on the sole has been very good so far, unless you get into some really muddy stuff, which no shoe really holds up in. I would compare the toe box to the Birkenstock style toe box if you are familiar with there style shoe's. Would I recommend this boot, YES most definitely. If you have a problem with flat feet then no. The support is not there, but that is not what this shoe was made for. Hope this helps.

**Q: How well are these with oil/slip resistant? I work in a kitchen for work.**
A: Haven't bought these yet, but I had a pair of leather minimalist shoes from vivo barefoot that didn't even have much tread on the soles, and I wore them to smithareens for two years in the kitchen. I'm sure these will work great.

**Q: I got to try on a pair, and the sole seemed rather hard - it would tap on the floor even when walking carefully. Do they get softer/quieter with wear?**
A: I've found that it depends on the type of floor you're walking on. I've found them to be loud when walking on laminate flooring especially. They're quieter on wood floors, but still a little 'tappy.' Like Eric above says, they're actual minimalist boots and have a rugged sole with hard rubber or whatever. So while they are a little 'tappy' just think, that's the sound of a long-lived sole. They'll start to separate from the upper long before they wear out.

**Q: True to size?**
A: The size was maybe 1 or 2 sizes smaller and the shoes where not the same as an other shoe from Tactical Research that I allready have

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very comfortable boots!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not perfect, but the best option right now
*by A***R on June 13, 2016*

These are currently my favorite minimalist style boots, but they are not perfect. I'll start with what I don't like. The main issue is that they are not as waterproof capable as all-leather boots would be. I use Huberd's Shoe Grease on almost ever leather item I own, and it even helps the water resistance of canvas. But since so much of this boot is canvas, I can't achieve the level of water resistance I get with other, all-leather boots. I ride motorcycles in Southeast Alaska, where it rains more often than not, and even freshly treated these boots don't provide the water resistance I need to keep my socks dry for short commutes, so I have to swap boots when getting on and off the motorcycle. Secondly, they aren't built to last. I am currently on my third pair. My first one lasted over a year before one of the side toe seams burst and the second lasted under a year before the heel part of the sole broke away. The third one I just received so I expect it to last another year. This is in line with the lifespan given by other reviews, and this is with both the shoe grease treatment I use (which increases boot life) and a large amount of walking (security officer and farm work, both of which decrease boot life), so you may be able to get over a year if you treat them more lightly. Still, this isn't a $300 pair of boots, so I'm not that concerned. Thirdly, these aren't true minimalist boots. They still have a heel life, though it's minor, and the sole isn't as thin as most minimalist footwear on the market. If this is your first minimalist piece of footwear your feet WILL need to adapt, but if this isn't, your feet won't be used to it either. With all that said, I still recommend these boots. They're probably the best value for your money for minimalist boots on the market, lasting longer than certain other more-expensive brands. The sole is dependable, grips well, and lasts a long time (it's where the sole meets the leather that's failed the two times). They're also not garishly colored; I can't stand brightly colored or multicolored footwear, so a plain black boot appeals to me. It's nice that there's at least one of those available for people who don't want shoe coffins. They're comfortable. If I'm wearing them casually, I don't even tie up the laces; I have them speed tied so I just loosen them, slip my foot in, and walk around. They are light, a pair of these wears less than a single shoe in some other popular styles. Wearing these, even though they're not truly minimalist, still feels like freedom, and it's freedom you can experience even while shoveling oil-soaked asphalt, patrolling lonely stairwells at night, chopping firewood in winter, or pulling fence in summer. I recommend them, even as I occasionally look for better alternative. There just isn't one yet.
