Rockstar quality product and gorgeous red color that I pray never goes away!
Please never stop making this beautiful henna!!!! it is absolutely gorgeous and I love that it only has two natural ingredients.. I colored my hair red for over 30 years, but wanted to move to a more natural healthier way of covering gray. I get more compliments now than I ever did with chemical colors and the red actually stays and does not fade… Ever! It’s a miracle.. I do mix it with cool temperature decaf organic coffee as one buyer suggested and then let it sit for at least three hours to mix and then at least three hours on my hair.. no chemical smell , washes out easily… Do follow the manufacturers advice that it does bleed a little for a while so avoid white clothing for about a week, but any white towels that it has bled on easily come out white again after a regular wash. Highly suggested and pray this product never goes away!

Beautiful: Deep Red
I am a performer, I am 44 years old, and have salt and pepper hair. A few years back, I noticed that most hair dies, even though they state that they cover gray hair, would not cover gray hair completely. I started to do a lot of research on the health benefits of switching to Henna. Most, Henna products have salt in them, which, if you have processed your hair prior, can cause your hair to break off. The Henna guys does not have the salt in their henna! I have a very dear friend that turned me onto this particular company. They have a lot of integrity, and the colors are so beautiful. I had been bleaching my own hair and dying at different colors. Mainly Pravana, and also semi permanent vegan dyes. I am a Tour Guide in New Orleans, and it gets quite hot here and tend to sweat a lot during the summer time, especially. One day I noticed, as I took witch hazel and wipe my chest, the cotton pad was black. I started to do research on the effects of chemical dyes, and how it is absorbed into your body, what I found is there are some cancer causing affects. Your skin is one of the biggest organs, I wanted to improve my mental health as well, as I am perimenopausal and figure that the absorption of these chemicals is probably affecting things that I don’t realize. Henna dye, darkens overtime, so I was quite worried to commit to this. I have long straight hair that almost touches my lower back for the first application, I used hibiscus tea that I brewed, put the deep red powder in a glass bowl. You do not want to use any kind of metal bowl slowly mixed the hibiscus tea in and stirred the Henna, so that there were no clumps and a cookie dough kind of texture. I also used Bravani powder. Adding in a quarter of the packet, this is something that you can add to the Henna that helps with strengthening the hair, etc. You can go on the henna guys.com and see the options that they have. I also used a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, then I let the Henna sit for eight hours, and set an alarm on my phone. I used three packets which was way too much, but wanted to make sure I had enough. After eight hours I mixed it again. Then I took a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and mixed it in, as the reviews stated it would help with gray coverage. I also made sure that I had a sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. I used a regular hair, dyeing, brush, gloves, and had a plastic cap nearby, the easiest way to do this with long hair, you section your hair off and four different sections and clipped the ones back that you were not using. You can use your hands, but I found it much easier to use a dye brush. I don’t know what people are so fussy about, I was reading reviews, and they said that it was super messy, however, I didn’t have any issues. Keep in mind I’ve been dying my hair for many many years. I did put a cape on over my clothes and made sure I wasn’t wearing anything that I would care about getting Henna on. If you get henna on your hands or body, it’s actually not as bad to get it off like people say. Use lemon juice and baking soda. Mix it into a paste and let it sit on your skin where you accidentally died, and after a couple minutes, just scrub it off with a washcloth, off and no problem Depending on the length of your hair, will determine how long you need to wait until you apply it. Once you apply the henna, you have to let it sit on your head for three hours and cover it. It is a clay, so your hair will feel heavy. Honestly, I just twisted my hair up into four buns and put a cap on basically just did some house work after three hours, I went into the shower to rinse it off. It is extremely important that when you rinse it off it is cold water. Also, it’s a good idea to rinse off the top of the cap before you pull it off. If you have long hair, you’re definitely one gonna wanna lean your head back and keep it back, the first time I did this I didn’t do this, and the water that dripped down my face had had a die coming down, so I did actually need to scrub my face after this happened. I would highly suggest a mirror on the side of your shower you can also start with warm water at first to acclimate your body, and then rinse it out if your hair. I would definitely suggest putting a leave in conditioner that is super hydrating that sulfate free, a.k.a. maybe a coconut or jojoba hair mask. Put it in your hair and leave it on as long as you can after the first application, then go in and rinse it off with cold water. A lot of people don’t realize that if you have been processing your hair for sometime, it takes your hair a while to adjust. Literally, the henna will coat your hair, follicle and help heal your hair, but it takes time. My hair felt dry and brittle the first time, the second time was better, and the third time, I finally feel like my hair has adjusted and it’s soft and silky. Honestly, after I first did my hair, it was very soft due to the oils I put in my hair. Just know if you do decide to take a warm shower, to actually seal the henna dye into your hair, you do need to use cold water the more you wash your hair with warm water, the quicker it will rinse out. The gray coverage is amazing and the health benefits are also equally as awesome. I should’ve been doing this years ago. There are many tutorials on YouTube specifically for this brand, the Henna guys. Are used a lot of those tutorials to approach this. Now, when I am outside and sweating, I know, at least if the henna goes into my skin, it will not cause my body harm. Also, the more I use this, the healthier and stronger my hair feels. to prevent darkening at my ends, I actually applied two times all over my hair, then the third time I only applied it to my roots, this way, I can keep the rest of my hair a little bit lighter There are several lightning techniques. If you have been dying your hair with Henna for a very long time, you can find a lot of those resources on YouTube. This may sound like a very long process, but I’m telling you, it is well well worth it. Wanted to share my experience, hope this was helpful, honestly this color is so beautiful and I get so many compliments, I would suggest it to anyone!

Long lasting hair dye
Great product, gives me gorgeous natural looking ginger hair. Noted i am a natural ash blonde. Of course some color washes out but over all most the color stays, me only needing to touch up my roots. Doesnt damage my hair like other hair dyes. Ive been using it for over 2 year. P.s i love the smell of it.

What a dirty mess with beautiful outcome.
What a mess - seriously, if you never dyed your hair at home (like me) you have no idea what you're getting yourself into. First some background. I used to occasionally dye my hair in my teens and early twenties but then less and less - last time was over 2 years ago. Now in my early thirties, I am very rapidly getting gray post pregnancy, from a couple of strands to roughly 20% within just weeks (looks even more on the picture but that is where the gray is worst, it's not everywhere like this). I decided that I'm not ready to have a head full of gray hair. However, since my pregnancy and also the whole time after, I had a very sensitive scalp - so itchy and uncomfortable actually that I ditched commercial shampoos and conditioner a while ago. So when I decided to get my hair dyed, I wanted it to be a gentle method. That's how I stumbled upon henna coloring. But I knew that I didn't want an intense red and was scared to end up with green hair - which accidentally seems to happen sometimes for people. So I did a lot of reading (I highly recommend reading freely available information from ancient sunrise - Catherine Cartwright-Jones really goes into detail about how henna works on hair and what actually works and what is a myth). After reading tons of reviews, I decided to go with medium brown from the henna guys. The package came with detailed instructions, which I followed - including the tip to add 3 tablespoons of vinegar before applying the mixture on the hair to cover the gray. I did not use coffee as suggested, instead I used very warm water. Of note, they suggest clean hair but dry, so I washed my hair the evening before (since I don't use heat to dry my hair) and then applied the henna in the morning, washing it off after 3 hours. As seen on the picture, getting rid of the gray hair was a huge success. It looks a bit redder in the picture than it actually is (it's only like this in very bright light), it's actually a deeper color, more chestnut. Really beautiful. In addition it made the hair very smooth feeling but definitely reduced my usually curly hair to waves. It didn't cause my hair to feel dry but right after getting rid of the henna mixture, it was badly tangled (nothing a detailing brush couldn't handle). I am so pleased with the color, that the color would be 5 stars. However, there are several negatives, which are more for henna dying in general than brand specific. Frist, it's a mess. I thought how bad can it be - I've used clay, rye flour, aloe vera gel, egg yolk, ayuverdic powders and more in my hair to wash/condition it ever since getting rid of commercial shampoos/conditioners. How much messier can henna be - answer is A LOT. I applied the mixture bent over the bathtub for minimal impact to the rest of the bathroom and despite immediately cleaning during and after applying the mixture to my hair, there are now some (faint) permanent stains in the tub from flying drops. And I was so careful. It was a huge stinky mess. Which brings me to number two - the smell. Those warning of a barn smell are not kidding. I thought how bad can it be - answer is really bad. Turns out it wasn't that type of barn smell which I would associate with fresh hay or something similar but more like wet animals, dirty stuffy barn type of smell. And it still hasn't left my hair (its been nearly 48 hours now). I'll definitely add some essential oil to my next hair wash. Third, the price for the package is really fair. I have hair that goes to my shoulder blades and the entire package was perfect for me. But these are not the entire costs for this endeavor. Additional supplies I needed were gloves (the ones the package came with were soaked in no time), lots and lots of saran wrap (the shower cap that was included is not nearly enough to contain the mess and with a baby at home I needed to be able to function normally in the 3 hours), and more than a roll of paper towels. I still managed to permanently dye two of our towels and a nightgown that I used as an additional covering on top of all the saran wrap (towels were to heavy and sliding off the wrap but I needed something fabric like as an additional barrier against the mixture particularly where the wrap ended). Four - I used enough water to give the mixture a pancake batter consistency (were roughly 2 cups). After the dye release time, the mixture was much firmer and adding the 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar before applying the mixture, made it the perfect consistency again. So once everything was in my hair, I wrung out the biggest clumps which made the head heavy with mud, not dry but nicely damp. I thought perfect, that will hold very well - but I was so wrong. Turns out when underneath so much saran wrap (which is actually recommended since the generated heat helps with the dying) my head starts sweating. So after a little over an hour, I'm suddenly constantly fighting streakes of sweat/henna running down my back and sides of my face (around the ear area). It was a very long 2 hours - I used the wrap and paper towels to catch the worst but I wear glasses and so the mixture always found a way out from underneath its plastic confinement since the glasses loosened the wrap very slightly. Which btw reminds me - for all people that cannot be 3 hours without glasses. Generously cover the sides of the glasses with saran wrap. At least my glasses were spared any permanent color changes. Lastly, before I used the mixture on my hair, I tested for any sensitive reaction. Nothing happened and while the mixture was on my head, I felt great for the full 3 hours, no itching, nothing. However, something strange happened when washing off the mess (I only used cool water as per instructions). My scalp started itching really bad and I even got a rash all over my face even though none of the henna ever touched my face. It was really weird and I still don't understand it. The rash in the face subsided after roughly 1 hour but the scalp remained irritated for much longer. At some point I applied some aloe vera gel and within minutes it started feeling better. Even now I still itch but I can tell, that it's getting better and better every hour. Overall, I really enjoy the rich color the medium brown henna/indigo mixture gave my hair and the henna guys brand was simple and instructions were easy to follow (I'm a bit skeptical why the dye release for this particular package is so short though - doesn't make much sense to me but I followed instructions anyway). For me it was worth the mess it produced - I highly recommend it.

Beware! Hard to remove dye!! Bright red, not dark brown.
I was hopeful to transition from dark brown box dye to a more natural product. But I was sadly disappointed. I felt like I was poisoned when using the henna. Nauseated, lightheaded, and lethargic. I had to leave it on my head for three hours feeling this way. The next day I used the Indigo for another three hours. This did not make me feel ill, but it barely toned down the extreme bright red I had on my roots. My hair is naturally light gray, so the color was intense. I wasn’t about to repeat this futile exercise again. So I started to research removing henna and Indigo from the hair. It’s almost impossible. Unlike box dye where you can use “color oops” and loosen the bond with the hair, henna bonds with the cuticle. Sally Beauty aesthetician recommended I use vodka to break the bond of the henna and Indigo from the hair shaft. This did help a little bit but I still have the bright red roots. You can also have a reaction if you try to use another box dye over the henna and it can break off your hair or turn it green so I decided I wanted it out of my hair as much as possible I then tried equal parts of baking soda, 20 developer and dandruff shampoo because I needed to remove a semi permanent hair color anyway. A licensed cosmologist recommended this. This greatly lightened my hair but barely touched the henna roots. I then used an oil treatment which is supposed to be the a gentle way to loosen the bond of the henna to the hair shaft. I mixed coconut oil and a heavy caster oil and wrap it in plastic and heat often on for a few hours. I’ve been added glycerin, which comes from oil and lime juice for the citric acid to lighten it overall. This all helped, but I still had fairly bright red roots. I did a patch test with “Color Fix” to make sure it would not break my hair at the roots where the henna was. Some reported it had hurt turn their hair green. The strand test didn’t seem to hurt my hair, so I proceeded to use it all over my head. Repeated. Faded my hair but still orange roots. I then patch tested bleaching a strand of hair along with the bright orange root. It didn’t turn green or break off so I proceeded to bleach my whole head, except for one inch at root. The last 15 minutes I worked the bleach into the roots as well. All the box died came out, but I still had light orange roots. I used a light ash blonde toner with red orange corrector drops added and 20 volume developer. This makes my hair silver and ash blonde but the roots are still a toned down warm color. I’ll continue to use the hot oil treatment on the roots every few days to see if I can remove it. This whole thing has literally taken days of my life to try to correct. I will never use henna.

Absolutely STUNNING color!
Love, love, LOVE the Henna Guys Deep Red Henna. Like a gorgeous red-headed vixen! I wasn’t positive how this would turn out since I have light brown hair. I am absolutely thrilled with the stunning results. My hair is shiny like a mirror & silky soft. A beautiful deep red color indoors & a bright & stunning rich red color outdoors. Just like the package shows! I ended up accidentally soaking the henna for a 24 hour period since I put the mixture together late in the AM around 9 & didn’t have the energy to apply it at 9 pm & leave it on my hair for 3 hours. I added the Apple Cider Vinegar just prior to applying since I have about ten strands of gray near my temples. The henna sat in the bowl for about 23 hours before application. I mixed everything together and added the black coffee as needed along the way to add more moisture & kept the bowl inside a 1 gallon ziploc bag so it wouldn’t dry out. The next day I laid out a bunch of towels I didn’t mind getting stained up & went to work. (I used my own disposable gloves since they work better than what arrived in the henna package.) My hair is below my bra strap, about half way down mg back & 1 package did my entire head of hair. (I purchased a two pack since I thought I might need more dye.) The henna actually didn’t dye my skin in areas it ended up touching like I thought. I did put petroleum jelly around my ears, forehead, neck etc where I thought dye might come into contact. Pieces of the henna covered hair kept coming out of the dye cap and touching lower parts of my face I hadn’t covered with jelly. No staining at all. I even got a bit on my lower arms that I washed off quite quickly, no staining. The couple of spots of henna that landed in places I couldn’t easily wash off didn’t stay stained for longer than one shower. I will continue buying from the Henna guys. Their Deep Red Henna is absolutely stunning & I get a lot of compliments on it. I’ve even been asked which salon I go to to get such a beautiful dye job. People are shocked when I say it’s a bag of Henna for less than $15. No harsh chemicals, or ingredients that destroy hair. This Henna actually softens the hair up quite a bit. Absolutely worth the purchase! The dye job lasts about 3 weeks with every other day washing of hair. I skipped shampooing my hair for the first three days & just rinsed with cold water. I have since washed my hair like normal in normal temperature shower water. I imagine the dye would last longer than 3 weeks if cold/cool water is used, but I like my showers warm. Overall an incredible product for a cheap amount of $! Yes, the application process is long, but the results are phenomenal! ETA: It’s now a month and a week after application and my hair is still beautiful red! I wash my hair every 2-3 days with sulfate free shampoo and the color is still beautiful. It has faded a bit so I will redye soon, but it’s actually lasting much longer than I originally thought. Still shiny & slippery soft, too! 10/10 absolutely recommend Deep Red Henna by The Henna Guys! ETA #2: Many months later and this is still my favorite Henna product ever. I get compliments even long after I’m due to redye my hair. My hair is shiny, thick and healthier than it’s ever been. I’m never going back to standard hair dye. This is a total game changer for me!

Good but messy!
The product is good and works well for color touch-up, but the process is time consuming and messy. It was my first-time using henna and it was easy to use followingthe instructions, but I over paid.

Detailed Instructions!
Okay, let me start out by describing my hair: I have mid-back length, super curly and thick hair. My hair is brown but it is often perceived as black when I am out of the sun. In the sun, you can tell it is brown. I have used henna twice before, from Lush. I used it about 7 months ago for the first time and followed up the treatment a month later. I really liked the Lush henna dye, but it honestly didn't do much for my hair. I really wanted the color to show through but it didn't....of course because my hair is dark. I do not use any chemicals in my hair. I make my own shampoo with coconut milk so my experience may be different than other people who use regular shampoo in their hair. Let me say that I tried this henna dye on myself (deep red) and on my sister who has lighter brown hair (and uses regular shampoo). This is hands down WAY better than the Lush one. For one, it is SOO much easier to use! It comes in the powder so I didn't have to grate it down first. I felt like it was less messier too. It didn't clump up like the Lush one did. The best part about this dye is that it actually stuck! You can see the redness even without the sunlight!! I don't know if it was the prep I did, but I absolutely love it and am so happy with the results! It is SUPER red so if you're wanting more of a burgundy, I would suggest another henna dye (I used deep red). My sister's hair also turned out red, obviously more noticeable than mine but I just couldn't believe how much more this henna dye actually appeared in my hair. In the light, you see nothing but redness and I am beyond happy! I'm not saying this will work for everyone, but I wouldn't give up hope just yet if you have darker hair. So to prep, here's what I did. As I mentioned, I use coconut milk for my hair as my shampoo. I washed it out the night prior to the application. I used 2 packs of the deep red dye. It was enough for me (having mid-back, super thick curly hair) and my sister (who has very thin shoulder-length hair). I will probably buy 2 packs next time but I will only be using 1 1/4 of it. You may be able to get away with 1 pack but I didn't want to risk it. Getting the henna dye ready was super easy! The instructions are okay but I wasn't really sure how much to add, etc. so I just researched different blogs to see what other people were doing. I grabbed a medium sized mixing bowl. I threw in 3 tbsp of raw honey, 2 tbsp of olive oil, 1 whole large lemon, some apple cider vinegar (I read this helps lighten your hair some) - I added maybe 1 tbsp. I then mixed in the 2 packs of henna dye. I read that you're supposed to brew up some tea - hibiscus is best since it helps lighten hair but I didn't have any. I used an organic black tea that I dug out of the pantry (I would definitely use hibiscus since I read this helps more). After brewing the tea, I squeezed out the bag and then poured about 20 oz of the water into the bowl. I did it little by little and mixed it each time with a whisk. The consistency is definitely what you would get from a cake batter so make sure not to add too much nor too little. It was so easy to mix (compared to Lush's henna dye)! After mixing it, I wrapped it with aluminum foil (since I had no plastic wrap) and left it at room temperature for 15 hours. When I checked it after those 15 hours, the consistency was exactly the same. It didn't get hard or anything like Lush's henna dye. I thought that I needed to keep it warm to be able to spread it but it was perfectly fine with just being at room temperature. Application was super easy! I started with my roots then went down my hair. I used the shower cap the dye came with and then used aluminum foil around my hair...I would definitely recommend plastic wrap but I didn't have it on-hand so I decided to use the next best thing. I did put Vaseline around my face before the application so I really recommend using that. I left the dye in my hair for about 9 hours. I had planned to only do 8, but I got busy and finally got around to it at about the 9 hour mark. I did not use any shampoo - I rinsed off my hair with cool water until the water ran clear....maybe 20 mins. I did not wash my hair again until 40 hours later, I used my coconut milk to cleanse my hair. The water did run an orange/yellow color but it wasn't too bad. Since then, I have been washing my hair every other day and the water is still running orange/yellow but it doesn't really bother me (I have washed my hair a total of 4 times since posting this review). I'm not sure if it's because I don't use regular shampoo, but it doesn't bother me that the water is still not clear. I am so happy with the results. I may try the burgundy color next time because this one is definitely a fire red. I did try to take pictures of my hair before and after, but the pictures really didn't do the color justice. Of course there are still hints of brown in my hair, but it's mostly red now! When I put it up in a bun, the bun is a fiery red and the roots look red with brown. It's such an amazing combination and I really can't wait to try the burgundy. I love the hair color but I would warn against it if you have lighter hair and don't want a fiery red. I hope this helps!
