Don't listen to the haters
This was one of my first purchases as a game to play for my Wii U when the Wii U first released. I vividly remember enjoying the game despite the massive amount of hate for it online. Recently I was feeling nostalgic, so I re-bought a Wii U and this game. I can safely say this game is incredibly fun. While yes, the gameplay is slow and the levels are somewhat un-inspired, there's some diamonds in the dirt in this game. First thing I have to praise is the graphics, even though this game runs at 30 fps on the Wii U, the colors are extremely vivid and pop off the screen. Most of Sonic's moveset is also here, with some new additions. The super peel out from Sonic CD is here, a reworked spin dash ( it goes infinitely now and if you hold down the spin dash button, automatically resumes the spin dash if you jump and land, similar to the drop dash in Sonic Mania ) and the bounce from SA2. Along with some new moves, a kick variation of the homing attack which unironically "kicks" the enemy you hit into surrounding enemies, a new run button, ( if you're used to the boost formula its basically the boost but it lasts infinitely ) some new wisps: eagle, asteroid, and rhythm are the new ones off the top of my head. Just fyi, if you purchase the 3ds version, the wisps will be slightly different, along with level design. Obviously the elephant in the room is the controversial parkour system. I personally love it, but I wish it wasn't so limiting. While there is techs to infinite wall run/scale walls, most of the time the sections the levels implement to coax the player into using the parkour system are so brief you can't really use the new system to its full potential. One thing that is annoying though is when Sonic vaults over obstacles when you don't want him to, but this happens so rarely it isn't a big problem. A unique thing this game does is lock levels based upon how many animals you've rescued, a feature I didn't find annoying at all since 90% of the time you get enough animals simply by playing and exploring the levels, but if you want to NEVER deal with this problem, simply go to the first level. There's an area with multiple animal capsules which you can open and then die to reset them, as your animal count in a level saves even if you die. The most amount of animals you'll need to unlock everything in the game is 5,000, so you can just abuse that until you have enough. Another criticism of the game I see people throw around is the game is too easy, and while I can admit the game isn't all that challenging, there were still several times I found myself needing to grind lives to avoid a game over, so take that how you will. All in all, I definitely recommend this game, and while it does have some strange design choices and glitches, I still got a lot of enjoyment out of this game.

Another Underrated Title
I'm going to try and keep this short and sweet and let you make up your mind. It seems that many fans and critics are 'up in the air' about Sonic: Lost World. People either love it, hate it, think its a failure, think its a step in the right direction, etc. etc. Here are a few things that are true Graphics: The game looks and plays great. I'm primarily a PC gamer so I do love my graphics but even with the 'slightly' limited Wii U graphics card everything in Sonic and the Wii U usually looks great (HD, colorful, very enjoyable) Sound: Some very very catchy tunes. Some music is energetic and some other tunes are very serene, tranquil, and atmospheric. There were even some music in there that gave me a big 'Super Mario Sunshine' vibe. Gameplay: This is where it goes all over the place for most people. I think Sonic fans are a bit too loyal for their own good (because most of them seem to have some 'set' expectations on what makes a great sonic game). And critics are way too picky about games in general. Coming from your run-of-the-mill gamer, this game is GREAT. Very easy to pick up and get use to. The controls arent as 'wonky' as people explained to me. There are times you do lose some momentum but once you figure out how to work things its great. A big complaint is that the game is too slow. And I say "GOOD". Sonic games were getting to be too much of a blur anyways. I loved Sonic Generations (and a few other previous titles) but the levels are quick and then its over. They were always exciting but you dont remember much about it. This game brings it back to the original Sonic game when it was still a platformer. The game also has some vibes of Super Mario 64. You get to explore different options and paths and where you want to go. You mix in some fun 2D stages and 2D rail stages, it is alot of fun. If you also add in the HD graphics and great music, you get a pretty good experience over all. Now there are a few stages that are bad at the end, and there are times when the controls (especally when you are learning them) can be a bit of a pain. But trust me, if you arent a totally new gamer then you should be able to handle yourself. I have played way worse games and overall I like the control scheme (and parkour controls as well!). Last thing, people said this game is TOO EASY, and yes at times it is, but not every game has to be super difficult. There are plenty of times you will crash into enemies or fall off platforms and die. And its pretty fun to have that challenge. The bosses are simple sometimes but you will still mess up a little bit (at least I did). Overall Sonic: Lost World is a simple good-looking easy experience. One that is easy to jump in-and-out of. If you are a Wii U owner, I would suggest this game as one of the few exclusives to nab up. 5/5 - Don't believe the crap. Go into it with an open mind. You will love it.

Not as bad as most would have you believe
As a long time Sonic fan, I was looking forward to this game, considering Nintendo was helping SEGA with this game. The last few Sonic games have been better than the bad ones that came before them, so hopes were high for this game. Other than one complaint I have, this game is actually pretty good. Unlike the most recent games, the focus on this game is not purely on speed. As fun as those games were, they lacked the platforming and enemies to take down that you had seen in the classic games, which are still very popular to this day. SEGA and Nintendo have gone back to those roots, added the parkour system (wall running) with some of the newer mechanics, like wall jumping and homing attacks returning. They also added a new kick attack, which can mix up how to fight the enemies, and returned the spin dash to replace the newer boosting mechanic. The final touch was to give Sonic 3 levels of speed. Walking, running and spin dash boosting. It works well, but does take a little bit to get used to initially. Once you've learned how to properly utilize the speeds and understand the parkour system, it becomes a blast to run through the levels as fast as you can to try to beat your best score, and to also collect all the hidden items for 100% The visuals are beautiful and the music is great. Silly cutscenes explaining the story, reminiscent of a saturday morning cartoon return, making it great for kids, as it keeps them interested. Levels can be beaten fairly easily as well, so they won't get frustrated, but like many games in this genre, going for 100% completion is a good challenge for the older, more experienced "hardcore" gamer. It's so easy to dismiss cartoony games when you're older, but there is plenty of fun and challenge to be found. My biggest, and only real complaint with this game, are the bosses. Sonic games aren't known for having really hard bosses, and some in the past have been really easy, but these bosses are just way, way too easy. Even the final boss seems as easy, or easier than some first bosses in older Sonic games. Only two bosses had any sort of challenge, and that's only because it took me a little bit to realize what I had to do to finish the fight. Once I learned that, the second time I went back to fight them, they became as easy as the others. It would have been nice to be able to play as other characters, especially Tails or Knuckles, but its not much of a complaint, just would have made for a bit of variety. Overall, it's a good game, with plenty to do. You're looking at around 15-20 hours to get all the collectibles, and longer if you go for true 100% and get the best speed ranking for every level. Good bang for your buck, and they have some DLC which adds levels and adjusts some things, like letting you get a free life with every 100 rings, like the old games. Definitely good for all gamers, fun for kids, challenging for older kids. Definitely recommend this game for Wii U owners.

It's surprisingly not bad
It's no secret that Sonic the Hedgehog has sucked for a LONG time since his Genesis days. The only exception to that rule seemed to be Sonic Generations. So I was very skeptical about this game, but I figured, I barely have ANY games for my Wii U and it's gonna be another month til the new Mario world game comes out, so I took a chance. And surprisingly, the game is actually pretty fun. The thing is that this game cannot helped but be compared to the Mario Galaxy games. And deservedly so, because Sonic Lost World borrows HEAVILY from Mario Galaxy. However, this is not to say it's a rip-off, it's just using the same formula. Unfortunately, the problem here is that it doesn't do it well enough. Sonic can be something of a pain to control, and a part of me feels true pity for the graphic designers that put all that work into these levels, only for the player to breeze through them with barely a perfunctory glance. Yes the reviews here on amazon are correct, "do not listen to the big game websites" on this one. And that is true, you shouldn't just accept those reviews at face value, because I do notice they are rather harsh on this game. On the other hand, don't listen to the Sonic FANBOYS either. Because their opinions on Sonic the Hedgehog are JUST AS BIASED, IF NOT MORE, than gaming websites like IGN, Gamespot, etc. The truth about this game is that it is flawed, disgustingly flawed. Like all Sonic games, the name of the game is speed, however, you can't just run as carefree and quick as you please in these levels, or all you will continually die by crashing into walls, into enemies, or just plain falling off the map. Now, you might be thinking, "So the game isn't worth playing then?" Not necessarily. The game can be very frustrating at times, but it can also be very pleasing. The music is well composed, and relaxing, the level design is colorful and again, pleasing to the eyes. The game is worth experiencing, but unless you're determined to become a master at the game, I can't see it being a game with much replay value. To be honest, I doubt I would have bought the game if it was for my PS3, the only reason I gave it a chance is because I was STRUGGLING to find some more games to play on my Wii U. And I was pleasantly surprised to see it wasn't just another pile of garbage shoveled out by Sega. It's not even close to a perfect game, and I certainly wouldn't choose it over AC 4 Black Flag, or Arkham Origins. So if you're on a budget, get one of those two instead. But if you're looking for a Wii U game you can enjoy at least once, it's worth a try. Alternatively, you could go with the 3DS version, which I'm told is much better. If you're a parent, and you're looking for a game for your child, at first I would say yes, it's a good game for kids. It has colorful characters that will amuse children, and colorful settings. But then again, I'm not so sure, because like I mentioned before, the game can be rather frustrating, as it encourages speeding through the level, but then punishes you for doing just that, by putting an enemy covered with spikes directly in your path. So it might prove to be too frustrating for small children. If your kid is around 5-7, I would recommend instead picking up a wii remote and nunchuk if you don't have one already, and getting Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 ( which can be played on the Wii U if you have the Wii Controllers) Just as colorful, wonderful soundtrack, but much more user friendly gameplay. But if you're a Sonic fan, I don't know why you even read this, because I'm sure you have already bought the game.

Misunderstood Game
This game does have some flaws but I'm still giving it 5 stars overall because it is a great new direction for the sonic franchise in my opinion. I also feel that this game is highly misunderstood by the game reviews and players alike. If you play this game treating it like a whole new game with new controls its excellent but if you play this expecting a fast paced sonic game you might be disappointed. Yes sonic is slowed down in this game, yes the controls take a little getting used to(sonic has a kick/homing attack/spin dash/climbing), yes some cheap deaths can be expected, yes some parts are difficult and might frustrate you, and yes the boss battles could have been better. STILL this is a great game and I had a great time playing it. I might be in the minority but I felt that the slowing down of sonic just made him that much more precise. Sonic controls wonderfully in this game once you've got all the moves down. He isn't all that slow either, if you want to speed run through the levels you just need to master the spin dash and double jump to blaze your way through if you really wanted to(check some youtube videos of players who are good at speed runs). Sonic has some new moves as well like the ability climb up trees and wall run across walls, it takes some practice but soon enough you'll run across walls collecting rings and climbing up walls to different areas. I really enjoyed all of sonic's moves and felt the controls were spot on. I really enjoyed many of the levels as well and even though some parts in some levels were difficult I surprisingly enjoyed the challenge, others may get frustrated but it depends on the player. There are some cheap deaths throughout the game but nothing that's unavoidable. The boss fights could have been better but I still enjoyed some of them since they had some cool concepts involved even though they were easy. The color powers are okay but nothing special though I did like the drill and a few others. I basically played this game like a platformer, I took my time in some levels and blazed through others depending on the level design. I really liked this game and with the update that gives you a life for every 100 rings and more lives when you get a game over, it is even more enjoyable. I played the game after this update maybe that's why I did not mind the difficult parts. Also the yoshi island dlc is free and was quite cool. I can recommend this game to platforming fans and sonic fans if they treat this game like a new one which it actually is. I liked this new direction for sonic but I understand that some people may not. At the price it is going for nowadays I say it's worth it. Happy gaming. PS-it is one of the games worth playing on Wii U and can serve as a holdover for people waiting for the bigger releases coming this year.

A definitive Wii U exclusive title
This game had a good amount of backlash attached to it, and for reasons I'll never know. Here's my take on this Wii U exclusive. Graphics- With the ongoing war of "60 fps/1080p" between Xbox One and PS4, we now insert a game that excels in graphics. I'd expect nothing less from Sega, but this game really looks good. In fact, it's the best looking Sonic game to date with a buttery smooth frame rate (60fps), and at 1080p (even though it's upscaled, I see no difference whatsoever), one of the things that I really liked about this game was the use of soft colors, vibrant colors and the fact that it has so much pop. Details like the soft bounces of clouds, free falling with loads of view and the signature "sonic camera angles" are nothing short of fantastic. The cut-scenes are also nothing short of good looking. I've yet to come across any frame rate dips or any blurry textures...overall, it's an excellent looking game. Score- 10/10 Sound- Here's where it's a mixed bag. The theme songs in this game vary a load. I haven't fun across any classic themes, however, some of the new themes like "Desert Ruins" had a nice sound, while others like the first level in Windy Hills were somewhat cheesy. The sound effects are nothing short of sonic...but what really bugged me was the voice acting. It was just ok to terrible at times, with lots of cheesy dialogue. It doesn't help knowing that the "Deadly six" have stereotypical Saturday morning cartoon voices...but if the aim was for a younger audience...I'd say mission accomplished. Score- 7.5/10 Gameplay- This is another category which stopped me from giving this game a full 5 stars. The controls are smooth for the most part, but the new control scheme is rather poorly explained, and newcomers are clueless as to how the game exactly works. Basically, A is attack. (which looks identical to jump), B is for jump (you can also double jump), Y is for some weird stomp/kick mechanic, RZ is for Run, LZ is for spinning, and the gamepad's touchscreen handles a plethora of moves not handled by mere control such as wisps or hints. The "hints" part was really confusing as I was under the impression I'd have to press some button, but loe and behold, on the bottom left side of the touchscreen is a colorful question mark. What many gamers didn't realize with this title is that it's not as fast as previous sonics for a reason. The game encourages exploration and collectibles, and there are loads of them. One thing I wasn't crazy about was the "red coin/emblem" system, because if you die after collecting one, you'll have to do it again...and getting them offers rewards in the form of secret levels and power-ups. This game also features Miiverse, but no multiplayer except local. Th story boils down to confusion on my part, Robotnik (Eggman) has some weird horn-device that controls the "deadly six" who are the main villains of the story...and one is likely to sympathize for them as they don't seem so evil. Your job is to stop them. That's it. (without spoiling the plot) One of the best reasons to buy this game is in addition to the graphics, sound and gameplay, is the DLC!!! Explore more with Yoshi's Island and the Legend of Zelda themed levels. Basically, this is the Mario Galaxy of Sonic games, but not quite as good as the classic Super Mario Galaxy. Score- 8.5/10 Overall thoughts- You're not gonna find a better looking game on the Wii U besides Mario Kart or Donkey Kong Tropical freeze, but even with the graphics being it's highest selling point, the gameplay does take some getting used to and it also requires some timing in speedy sections. If you played Sonic Colors, then you'd now what to expect...granted, smoother controls and better graphics.

Sonic, Meet Sonic
This is an EXCELLENT installment in the 3D Sonic Era, now let me tell you why: If you were to jump back to the old-school 2D Sonic the Hedgehog, you'l notice almost immediately how incredibly important precision is. Speed is essential, but it's more the illusion of speed instead of the actual use of incredibly fast movement. Simply holding right on your D-Pad will not earn you victory, but there is some "auto-pilot" involved in every Sonic installment. In this newest Sonic, you'll feel the speed you always have, but this time you'll have that insane timing and precision required in order to beat the level in time. With a slight overworld and powerups shared throughout the community, this game brings in Sonic Generations and Sonic Colors fused with a bit of Sonic Adventure. You can have one of the best Sonic experiences you ever have with this game. While the boss fights leave you wanting more, the only Sonic game with intricate boss fights is Sonic Adventure (1 & 2) while others really just involve Mario-esque timing and jumping patterns. Gameplay being solid, let's look at other aspects. The music is amazingly scored and more similar to classic Sonic versus the Punk-Rock newer Sonic. The graphics are beautiful and Sonic (and his world/friends) has never looked better. The controls are great; while they boast a learning curve, once mastered they are seamless and implemented very well with the Parkour mixed with the RUNRUNRUN of it all. The one downside is, playing as other characters had become an incredible little pallet cleanser, but it's not terribly missed since this gameplay is so fresh and pristine. Sonic fans will want to give this game a try, because it truly reinvents Sonic with the most attentive respect for its roots. Slightly childish, but intentionally so. Lazy translations and not always perfect mouth animation sync'd with audible speech, but we're used to that!

Naysayers, Begone
What can I say? I'm a huge Sonic The Hedgehog fan, and when I first saw the screenshots of this game coming to Wii U, I knew it had promise. My opinions started to sway once reviews started pouring in, but thank God I didn't listen to those people. This game is exactly what I wanted in a new Sonic game. Great gameplay, a colorful soundtrack, secret hidden collectables, and a truly great and funny story. The only part of.the soundtrack I didn't like in the whole game is unfortunately the title screen music which happens to be the main theme. It mainly just keeps looping and I get bored of it very quickly. Besides that one song, I thought the soundtrack was phenomenal and genuinely got me pumped to play the game every time I turned it on. The gameplay greatly reminded me of Super Mario Galaxy, and even though they weren't able to achieve the same level of perfection that it has, they still did a dang good job. There are a few missteps in the gameplay like bad camera angles, but I found myself getting used to them over time. Getting this game as a Wii U exclusive is a huge score for me. It's one of the best Sonic games they have released in many years and I am proud to have it in my collection on Wii U.
