Can i primarily access this via its usb 3.0 port?  i'd like to have this plugged into my computer so i can use it as a video source drive.

Accepted Answer

No you cannot.  The usb ports are for additional usb storage and transferring to and from the EX4100.  You cannot connect it directly to your computer.

Question 2

Are there western digital tools to defragment the nas?

Not that I am aware of, but it is probably possible to enable ssh and log into the drive using a terminal.. From there, you can most likely run apt-get and install a defrag tool that can run thru the same command line..  If it is anything like the MyBook Live (most likely is) then the ssh name is "root" and the password "welc0me" (that is a zero "0", not a capital o "O")..  My guess is it's running a form of Debian Linux, so look for defrag tools compatible with Debian..

Question 3

I have two 4tb drives in raid 1 config can i add 2 6tb drives to my open bays?

Since the data is mirrored on all disks belonging to the RAID 1 array, the array can only be as big as the smallest disk. So you will be sacrificing drive space unless the NAS will allow a RAID 1 array on two 4TB Drives and a separate RAID 1 array for the 2 6TB Drives, which I'm not sure about. *Update* It looks like it may be possible to add the two 6TB Dives as a separate RAID 1 array, however, I would research this a bit further. https://community.wd.com/t/ex4100-2-drives-raid-1-and-one-single-disk/101381

Question 4

If I purchase the storage device with 40TB it will come with drives?

I purchased the "WD 24TB My Cloud EX4100 Expert Series 4-Bay Network Attached Storage" and "YES" the disk bay had qty. 4 (WD RED disk drives each one was 6TB in storage size) making a total of 24 terabyte (TB). I configured the 24TB to be in a RAID 5 configuration for data redundancy (that is... if any one (1) disk drive dies or goes bad, I DON'T lose any data). I also purchased an extra 6TB disk drive (Western Digital - WD RED) as a "hot swap" replacement disk, when one of the original disk drive does go bad (hopefully NOT for a long time from now). (Note: in Raid 5 config I only have about ~18TB of the 24TB for actual storage... that's the price I pay for data redundancy... which is why I bought this personal "Cloud" storage device in the first place... It was for the RAID 5 redundancy.) If you bought the  40TB size, I'm guessing that it will come with 4 each, 10TB disk drives (40TB total) in the 4 disk bays. I hope this answer isn't to simple and that it helps!
