Genuine Briggs & Stratton 790849 Air Vane Spring Replacement Part, Gray

Genuine OEM Part. Worked as described. Just so you know, This little part was the missing link to whether the carburetor worked or not. So if your lawnmower is not turning over on first pull, even after a complete cleaning/overhaul or complete replacement as I did, it can very well be because of something as insignificant and easier to overlook, correct tinsel tension of this little spring. I had an incorrect spring that its tension was to tight and strong, that it did not allow any or enough of a give for the choke of the carburetor to open and allow some air in so it can turn over. So the right thinniss and tension for the choke to work as intended is vital as I discovered. Briggs and Stratton motors are truly very precise and finicky. So you really cannot cut corners using non-OEM parts. For some parts, it can really make the difference, and this Air Vane Spring is definitely one of them.

My faithful vintage 2009 Craftsman Platinum lawn mower (model 917.376401 made by AYP) with a Briggs Quantum 6.75hp engine (model 126T02-1346-B1) needed a new ignition module (aka coil). I had to make some mods to the air vane to clear the new coil and sure enough, lost the spring when it shot to some unknown corner of my shop. Still have the Owners Manual for the mower. Consulted the parts list and verified the part number needed – 790849. Sure you can get generics on the cheap but a lot of the reviews for them are less than stellar. My mower has been well maintained and runs like a champ. I expect to get many more years of service out of it. Well worth it to go with OEM. The part I received came sealed in genuine Briggs packaging with the part number labeled. I have no reason to believe it is anything other than OEM. Fit and function of the spring was perfect. Got this part and installed it in June 2025. Waited to do this review to make sure it functioned correctly over time. Used the mower all summer and no problems to report. With this new spring, the mower starts first pull every time, warms up properly, and runs smooth. Can’t ask for more than that. Worth the extra $$ to get the OEM part. Highly recommend.

Product fit perfectly. Mower immediately turned on. It arrived about 3 days earlier than the expected delivery date. I made the mistake in buying one of the 3rd party springs with the same product number because it was 1 day delivery and those springs were too tight an my mower never turned on due to the 3rd party string. Better to wait the 3-4 days for this OEM part to arrive

This was a perfect fit for an old Craftsman Platinum lawn mower with a Briggs and Stratton Engine. The original symptom was the engine would start on the first pull but then stall within 30 seconds. The old spring was not controlling the auto choke properly. It worked perfectly after installing this spring.
