THE BEST TOOL OUT THERE FOR FABRIC SOFTENER BESIDES FABRIC SOFTENER (actually, this may be better)!
I have been using Downy balls since college when I believe a free one got sent to my parents and I stole it and have been obsessed with it ever since. I had the last one for 5+ years and I have no idea what happened to it, did I leave it at the laundry room, did someone take it, did I misplace it, we may never know. After not using this for ONE LAUNDRY CYCLE and suffering the consequences of stiff clothing, I came to Amazon to order a new ball. Oh wait, one ball is $9.99 and 3 balls are $14.99? Okay then, guess we are getting three! Because of getting 3, I gifted my partner one too. The best thing about the ball is consistency. Even if I don't use Downy (which I usually use Mrs Myers), the ball is still a gamechanger, esp if its a top loader washer. You can toss the ball into the washer once you load detergent and not have to worry about running back down there or anything else really. Once the wash cycle is complete, its always I mean CONSISTENTLY ALWAYS drained out of the ball, sometimes some water may remain in it, of which I dump out. I am obsessed with this tool and it is one of very few tools I have that the second I misplace it, I have to buy another. HENCE THIS REVIEW!!!

Yay!
I love this little ball!!! Game changer. I remember when these rolled out when I was little and those weren't that great and we ditched it. But this one!!! I love! My clothes smell fresh again. But most importantly it has helped me delay the replacement of my washer. It says it doesn't work well w front load washers but my washer agitates just fine to enable the release latch. I definitely endorse this product.

Great product that I have used for years
I have used these for years. They are great for apartment living when you have to go to a laundry room. No running to add softener. A lot of washing machines in apartment buildings lock when they start so you can pop these in at the beginning.

Sanding tweak!
I bought three Downy Balls from a seller, and they arrived just as expected. I use a portable washer with a 2‑cubic‑foot tub, and I don’t use fabric softener, only vinegar. The problem was that the balls wouldn’t pop open with vinegar during the rinse cycle. I was tired of having to manually time loads or start a separate rinse cycle just for vinegar. Using the detergent compartment wasn’t an option, since vinegar isn’t dense enough and just runs straight through. And because I wash with ¼ cup liquid soap plus 2 tablespoons of baking soda, I don’t want vinegar mixing with the baking soda, they cancel each other out. So, I tried a DIY fix: I took 600‑grit sandpaper and lightly sanded the lip of one ball. At first, I went around it four times, no change. I did four more passes, and that worked perfectly. The ball stayed sealed during the wash cycle, then popped open every time during the rinse. After about 20 loads, I stopped checking constantly. I just timed it so I could confirm right after the wash cycle that it was still sealed, then watched through the three‑minute rinse cycle to see it release. It’s been flawless. Now I only check once a week, usually on Sunday, and it’s still working like a charm. I even tested one of the other balls that I didn’t sand, and it still refuses to open, proving the sanding tweak made the difference.

For those living a non-toxic life...here's a solution
I have always used white vinegar in my Downy Ball when washing clothes. It's non-toxic, and not only does it prevent colors from bleeding, but it also makes clothes non-static when you take them out of the dryer.

Good idea, but doesn't always release consistently
This Downy Ball Automatic Dosing Dispenser was a decent idea in theory, but the execution didn't quite live up to what I was hoping for in daily use. The concept is simple enough, you fill it with fabric softener, toss it in with your laundry, and it's supposed to release automatically once the wash cycle hits the rinse phase, but in practice it didn't always work the way it was supposed to. More than a few times I'd open the washer expecting the ball to be empty, only to find it still full or partially full, meaning the fabric softener never actually made it into the load. Other times it seemed to release too early, before the rinse cycle even started, which somewhat defeats the purpose of using it in the first place. It's a bit frustrating because when it does work correctly, it's genuinely convenient, no more measuring out liquid softener or trying to time when to add it manually. But the inconsistency really undercuts that convenience, since you can't fully trust it to do its job every single time. I also noticed that different wash cycles and settings seemed to affect how reliably it opened, so results varied depending on what I was washing and how. Cleaning it out is simple enough, and it doesn't seem to degrade or wear out quickly, so build quality isn't really the issue here, it's purely the release mechanism that's hit or miss. If it worked consistently, this would easily be a 4 or 5 star product given how useful the concept is, but the unreliable dosing knocks it down for me. Might work better for some people depending on their washing machine type, but for my setup, it was inconsistent enough that I wouldn't rely on it for every load.

It might be too soon, but...
It functions perfectly and as described. I don't know for long the mechanism will work, but for now, this little mech device solves all my issues. 10/10

Après un lavage, la boule est cassé.
Il a fonctionné une seule fois, ça fait vraiment cher le lavage. Je souhaiterais être remboursé car là c’est pas normal
