UPDATE! I JUST ORDERED MY SECOND ONE RIGHT AFTER MY RESULTS THE FOLLOWING MORNING ! WORTH EVERY PENNY AND THE 8HOURS TO ACHEIEVE A CARRIBEAN TAN WITHOUT LEAVING YOUR HOME !!! Wow ... very easy to use as I'm new to self tanning and hate the self tan smell Barely noticeable. TO achieve my tan dark and glow is flawless ... I had to apply 4 layers within 15min intervals then , dried out for 6 8 hours before I rinsed off in shower and went to sleep woke as if I came back from a week long vacation in the carribeans!!!! One bottle ... 4 applications as I'm very fair toned , so 30% of bottle per tan which should last a week. A bit pricey , but definitely worth it !!! I don't see any orange hue . Use a mitt or your hands will be ORANGE you don't see the tan work fully untill after the color transforms own within 6 to 8 hours then after shower rinse with mild soap and patting body dry ... results are 10/10

I was skeptical at first about a clear tanning water, but Tanologist Dark has officially earned a spot in my glow-up routine. It gives me that bronzed, even tan without the typical self-tanner struggles. Pros: • Streak-Free Glow: I was shocked at how even the tan developed. No orange patches, no weird buildup around knees or elbows—just a natural, deep bronze. • No Transfer: Because it’s a clear formula, it doesn’t stain sheets, clothes, or towels. HUGE win. • Lightweight & Fast-Drying: It feels like a facial mist going on—super light and dries in minutes. No sticky feeling! • Customizable Tan: You can do one layer for a glow or build it up for a darker look. I saw the full color develop in about 4–6 hours. • Vegan & Clean Ingredients: Bonus points for being cruelty-free, vegan, and free of parabens and sulfates. Cons: • No Guide Color: Since it’s clear, you do have to be a little more careful when applying—you won’t see where you’ve sprayed until it develops. I recommend using a mitt and spraying section by section. • Strong Scent at First: It has a fresh scent going on, but you can smell the DHA (that typical self-tan smell) slightly as it develops—not the worst, but noticeable. If you want a deep tan without the mess, stickiness, or drama, Tanologist’s Dark Tanning Water is a total win. Just exfoliate, mist, blend with a mitt, and let it work its magic. This is the best self tanner I've found that I can safely use on my face and applies evenly, gives a natural looking color, and doesn't have "the smell". I don't use a mitt for facial application, I just spray pretty much my whole head and neck evenly (but lighter over the hair, I'm a guy with buzzed hair and it looks weird if you don't get any color on your scalp) and just stand with my eyes closed and take a minute to center and relax (aka meditate) until it has soaked in enough to stay put. But most importantly, it doesn't make me break out. The reason this doesn't get a full five stars is because I have to deduct 1 star for the pricing. I know there are the "premium" self tanners that are absurd in their pricing by comparison, but those are for people who like to spend a lot of money on fancy looking bottles. Tanologist, on the other hand, has quickly grown to fill the "high quality but reasonably priced" market that was pretty much empty, with a few exceptions. But their product pricing has been on a steady and fast paced rise, the "Dark" tanning water spray is of particular note now clocking in at $20 when it was just $12 and change not too long ago. The body lotions now topping $13, with the former price about $10. That is far, far greater a rise than the inflation rate. Their pricing is their prerogative, indeed, but it's a tough sell for me and I've actively been looking for an alternative to fill its role. The rest of my review on the product and usage below (if you are still reading for some reason) - I'm a pretty average skin tone, maybe a little less if it's been a really long time since I've been in the sun, but I still use the "Dark" level and it looks great and you don't have to do a 2nd coat. The step down to medium is a big one and I don't find it very effective or noticeable and definitely not worth spending money on. The step down from medium to light is also a big one. You go from barely noticeable to simply not effective. But the "Dark", that's the money choice right there. While it's fine for use anywhere head or body, I find I have a hard time getting any spray to look even on my body and end up just spraying it and immediately using a mitt to smooth and blend. For this reason, I actually prefer the Tanologist "Dark" mouse version of this same product (same purple colored bottle except opaque and with a foam pump), which is usually sold along side this spray. So I pretty much use this spray exclusively as a face/head/neck misting type application and the mousse version for body/arms/legs (with a mitt, you must use a mitt or you won't like the result). The reason I get more "fan girl" over the spay water versus the mousse is because there are far less options made to be safe for the face and actually don't cause breakouts (true story - even though the term "non-comedogenic" sounds medical and official, it has no meaning to the FDA and any manufacturer for any cosmetic product can put it on the label, no matter if it's packed with pore clogging ingredients in a cocoa butter based grease. The only way to know for sure is to reference a (reputable) dermatological website that has an ingredient checking tool (I like acneclinicnyc[DOT]com because you can copy the entire ingredients list text from the product listing and paste the whole thing into their "checker" and it can do all of them at once unlike some others that are one-by-one). I still fully recommend this, for sure, but it's "value" is starting to slip. $20 is edge case for me, much more and it will move into "poor value" land and I won't be recommending it anymore. I won't discourage use, rather just take a neutral stance on it.

I have naturally olive colored skin, and in the summer I get darker-but only in certain areas. So, I like to try out some self-tanning products from time to time, to add some glow and even out skin tone...✨️ I really like this 'Tanologist' Express Self Tan Water. It comes in a decent sized bottle (3.38 Fl Oz), and has a nice spray nozzle that dispenses a fine mist. I can use this on my face and body, and it adds a natural looking glow. There is no orange color, and it doesn't look fake either. When I spray it, I use my hands or a hand mitt to blend out the water a little bit in certain spots. I like how it develops over time, and you can see what it looks like within an hour or 2 (at least in my experiences). Then, if I decide I want to add a little more, I can build up the color. The shade I got was medium, which I think works perfectly for someone like me with my medium skin tone. I love this product, and appreciate that there's natural and vegan ingredients inside. I would absolutely order this again, and would consider ordering some of the other products by 'Tanologist' in the future. I think their products are reasonable in price, and I'm very satisfied with this product. Also, another thing I must mention is that this product didn't give me that pungent scent that some self-tanner products do. So, that's also a plus. 😊

This is good stuff and easier to put on than other products I’ve tried. Has lasted thru 2 showers. I didn’t scrub hard but still consistent color.

The light shade really doesn’t do a whole lot. Best if you are very pale or are looking to be smidge darker with a more natural color. Says it doesn’t have that self tanner smell but it still does. Just not as strong as others. It’ll stain the hell out of your hands. Much worse than other products. I do like that it’s a spray. Quicker to apply than my other self tanners. Doesn’t last as long as other products.

I actually really like this self-tanner when it’s freshly applied. The Dark shade gives me a noticeable tan without looking ridiculously orange, and because it’s a clear water mist, it’s much less messy than some of the traditional self-tanners I’ve used. My reason for taking off a star is what happens about a week later. As the tan starts wearing off, it doesn’t always fade evenly on me. I start getting those random splotchy areas where some spots are still tan and others have faded, and then it’s time to exfoliate everything off and basically start over. That being said, the initial results are good enough that I still use it. Just know that the maintenance is real. 😂 Great tan for the first several days, not quite as pretty on its way out.

I am editing my original review, which I now feel was harsh and unfair. There were 3 key factors that made up my analysis, and I was simply wrong on one, and the other two aren't necessarily the product's fault. I am retracting my review and replacing it with this explanation and a better, fairer analysis. My 3 main issues in the original review were - 1) Not clearly stating on the product or in the marketing copy that it was "non-comodegenic" which was a requirement for my choice in facial products. I have since learned that the term "non-comedogenic" has no legal or regulatory meaning in the US and can be used at will, according to the FDA. Even if a product does actually clog pores/cause breakouts, the manufacturer is free to slap "non-comodegenic" on the bottle/package/marketing copy all they like. It's just another garbage marketing term, like "healthy" or "nurishing" to name a few. I was wrong to have given so much weight to a term I believed required some accountability and regulatory oversight in order to claim it. Also, Tanologist has significantly cleared up their marketing messaging and product labeling for their "non-comodegenic" claimed offerings. 2) I had a breakout while I was using it. I am prone to clogged pores if not careful, and I attributed a small break out during the use of this product over the course of 3-4 weeks. But, to be fair, I failed to take into account that other things can cause a transient blemish or two, like if I'm coming down with a cold, eating poorly, not drinking enough fluids, stress, etc. Any of those factors could have come into play. Plus, if it was "pore clogging" it would have done so immediately and would have continued until I stopped using it, which was not the case. 3) It didn't give much color or the impression of a tan after continued use. This one is a draw. My results were indeed barely noticeable after 3 daily applications, in comparison the Jergens gradual face tanning lotion (an old standby) gives far more color after 3 applications. To be fair, I did purchase the "light" version of the product. I have since tried the dark version with dramatically better results and find myself purchasing it over other options on a regular basis. My suggestion to anyone who may not be sure on which to get is to skip the "light" version and go straight to the "medium", which is more noticeable but not very dark. I have somewhat fair skin and settled on the "dark" version, just to give some kind of reference. So, in reality, this was just a product version mismatch with my needs, which could be avoided if there were better examples, like a side-by-side-by-side comparison to illustrate expectations for each of the light, medium and dark options. I am adjusting my rating up to 4 stars. I can't give 5 because it is just too light in color. But that is my opinion. There might be some of you who are looking for a decent quality self tanning spray that is a suggestion of a tan and not the impression of one. To note - I have since become fond of several of the Tanologist products and feel it is a sorely needed option in the market that is both quality and affordable. I recommend this tanning spray in the "dark" version and a Special mention to the Hydrating Daily Glow Body Lotion- Medium/Dark. It has become my preferred gradual self tanning lotion. It doesn't smell bad (even after a few hours/next day), it truly is hydrating, it's not heavy feeling (like the Jergens gradual is), it doesn't streak, and it gives just a little-bit more color than the other gradual tanning lotions (compared to the Jergens gradual for a common reference point). *I'm not picking on Jergens, I've been a big fan of their gradual face and body gradual tanning lotions for years and I still am, it's just that Tanologist products have edged in as my first choice with Jergens being my old standby.

I'm always sceptical about self tan as it usually smells like burnt caramel and its patchy. This was on Louise Thompson Instagram recently and I could see it worked. I bought a tanning mit as I dont want orange fingers ;) I applied only a few sprays on each section of my body and it's worked really well. I think I'm from the same generation as Casper the ghost as I look like I've been in the wash with a whitening gel... my legs are paler than my white walls. I would definitely recommend and I put it on after my shower in the evening and woke to a glowing tan. Doesn't smell to bad and does have a hint of a burnt caramel smell but hey, I'm nicely tanned so I'll cope with the smell. There are worse smells in the world ;)
