I love writing and I wanted to explore some ways to spice up birthday cards , letters, and signs around the house. This book is perfect for that, It goes over technique, the different strokes to use, and teaches two completely different styles in both upper and lower case. I love how much space there is for practicing every single letter. There are several practice pages for lower and upper case in two complete styles:: Basic Brush Alphabet and Basic Monoline Alphabet. Then, there are several practice pages for common word in both styless. Lots of pages to practice and write. There is a lot more to do to get started right away. There is also a great overview of connections for connecting the letters of different styles, and examples of the serif alphabet (upper and lower case) and san serif alphabet (upper and lower case). There are practice pages for a variety of "Flourishes and Swashes" , wreaths, doodles, and then it illustrates how to compose all the elements together using variations, mixing and matching, and designing. Every section has a place for you to practice yourself. The different styles, the number of practicing pages, and the design section make this an incredible book for starters. I am so glad I purchased it! It is more hands on and "putting the pen to paper" practice sheets than other books similar to it. I would highly recommend this book to anyone!

I wanted to learn calligraphy. Being a lefty, I knew it would be hard. This guide has so much practice sections, that it's been really fun. I would recommend to anyone wanting to learn a new hobby.

My daughter loves this book to practice calligraphy in. Pages don’t leak through. Good variety of handwriting styles.

The calligraphy book was ok. Wasn’t that excited when I got it because I guess it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. Also there were 2 pages or so that were written in, no biggie! I still kept it because it is a good tool for beginners just starting out.

This is such a great beginner’s guide. :) The author starts the book with a lovely about-me section, which explains why her tips and tricks throughout the book are so intuitive and helpful. For example, I was practising the initial lines and basic strokes as if I were handwriting - all one stroke. But then on the next page she provided a short explanation of how lettering requires us to break habits that are so natural to us. E.g., (and I’m paraphrasing), ‘you probably joined all your strokes in those practices, right? For lettering, remember, it is not the same as handwriting, so try to lift your pen mid-letter so you have time to reorientate your brain and hand for the next stroke - resulting in more smooth lines’. Her conversational advice makes you feel like she’s providing a YouTube tutorial, when in actuality she is probably just describing her own struggles when learning this craft, and knows exactly when you’ll encounter the same difficulties. I’m a high school teacher, and I can tell you that this is a rare skill! :) Scaffolding the learning by reminding students of what feels natural, and what challenges they can expect sets them up for success because they are mindful of their learning … while learning. I know that’s a bit ‘meta’’, but it’s just to show my appreciation for how she has thoughtfully developed this guide and how easy it feels to follow. :) It isn’t a book of random worksheets to just practise until perfect. She carefully explains what you’re practising, why it feels unnatural at first, what might be tricky, how you can overcome common trip-ups, and what you’ll be able to achieve if you keep up the practice over time. I am really happy with this purchase. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to improve my whiteboard handwriting to create more engaging notes for my students in the future. Thanks Kristin!
