Excellent quality, rich content, careful design
The media could not be loaded. The overall quality is very good, the feel is thick, the paper is also very delicate, and it is not easy to tear. There is no need to worry about the child's turning over and breaking it. There is no strange smell, and I feel at ease when I get it in my hand. The content arrangement is also very clear, and the illustrations are rich. Children especially like to read it. I also think this children's dictionary is very worthwhile, and I am really satisfied with this purchase.

A is for Awesome
My little writer wants to expand his horizons and we would really like to stop fielding "How do I spell ____" every four minutes. Thus a compromise, the Children's Dictionary from Scholastic. Our criteria for a dictionary were pretty simple: it needed to be colourful, appropriate for a precocious 7-year-old, and extensive enough to handle inquiries like spelling president, because, typically, and vacation. We didn't want to venture into more complex dictionaries beyond his current ability to read and locate words, and a pretty format would help. This dictionary hits all those high notes. It's easily one of the nicest dictionaries going for this age group, with easy to read entries that feature lots of white space, colour coding, and succinct descriptions that won't leave kiddo or parent confused. He can sit down and lose himself in the informative sections about presidents, states, and trees. With some instructions on basic dictionary use from Mom and Dad, our son can usually find the correct spelling without resorting to asking Siri or a parent. We have noticed a significant improvement in his overall literacy and spelling accuracy in the two months he has had it, and his ability to locate words or at least get close enough to recognize the right one is made so much easier by the clean, bold tags. For younger readers, it's going to be less of a reference material than something they can grow into. For older readers, this is still an excellent addition because of its comprehensive store of common words, good descriptions for what each means, and illustrations kept to a reasonable minimum.

Nice Hardcover, Easy to Use, Kid Loves
Now that my 10 year old is in 5th grade he has to define his own vocabulary words. We started out with online dictionaries but I found some of the definitions to be too advanced for his understanding and sometimes he had to choose between several possible meanings. A friend suggested a children's dictionary so I came here to search options. Plus, I thought it'd be good for him to learn to use one since they don't seem to be teaching indexing and "alphabetical" order in school anymore. The reviews were scarce because it's a newly released edition but after looking at several others I settled on this one after reading reviews for the previous version. He has 20 words every week, and after the 3rd week of use we haven't found any words to be missing from the dictionary. He is enjoying using it and having an easier time doing his homework. He appreciates the pictures and that it covers modern technology like USB cords! It's a nice hardcover and arrived in great condition. We did find a small tear in one of the pages but I can't be positive the kid didn't do it. The pages are thick enough, font is a good size, and the colors are vibrant. The definitions are written in a way that's easy for an elementary school student to understand. The previous version is a bit cheaper but I was glad to spend the extra $10 bucks or so because I know my younger son in kindergarten will get good use out of it as well. Buy it, you'll like it.

Honestly, the perfect children’s dictionary. 11/10!
When my 9 year old niece asked for a dictionary, I set upon my search for the perfect one, and I do believe i found it with this one! There are pictures and fun facts here and there that tell the history of some words, which is super cool! For example, I learned from one of these fun fact word history boxes that the word intestine literally comes from the Latin intestinus which means the thing that is inside. Also, there’s no weird, indecipherable dictionary letters that are supposed to tell you how to pronounce the word but really serve no purpose whatsoever because they’re totally unintuitive. No no, this dictionary uses literal phonetic sounds to help you sound out the word. For example, you would find ber•ee in the definition of berry. Perfect. And finally, I really loved that they show the whole word intact for each entry, then they define it, then they break it out into the syllables and the phonetic pronunciation.
