Of course you can use it without a dimmer switch! I suspect the emphasis on it being dimmable is because many of the newer energy saving technologies do not work with traditional dimmer switches designed for older incandescent bulbs. However, it's worth noting that if you do fit a dimmer such that you "turn the volume up" whenever you use the light, the soft start may extend the life of the bulb by a generous margin as this will reduce the thermal shock caused by simple on/off switching.

Have downlighters under loft insulation and warned about heat vs dichroic. Do these generate upward heat please?

I have mine under loft insulation and when I put the system in I had the same thought. I ended up cutting a small hole in the insulation to let any heat escape. I have had them for years since without issue.

I want an open bulb i.e. no glass cover. Does this bulb have a glass cover? If it does can you buy one without a glass cover.

Yes it has a cover. I have not seen any with no cover. It would be dangerous I would think.
