Is this lighter weight than plaster gauze?

I haven't had any experience with plaster gauze but, if the weight of plaster of paris is any indication of the the weight then yes fiberglass casting is much lighter and dries much quicker too.

How many rolls do you need for it to be effective for a leg cast?

Depending on the size of the leg. On average adult 4in Fiberglass casting tape I would say 6 to 8.

Does this product stick to it's self when applied, around the thumb area instead of having to trim it to make it fit?

I just arrived home so there is a delay in my response - this is a casting tape, not what I was looking for - it essentially creates a cast and you would wrap it around your thumb to create an opening.
