How do I connect to the power strip

It depends what you are trying to do, but the most common way is to connect the pronged end to the power strip, then plug your tool(?) to the receptacled end

I would like to use this to reduce the output power of a hairdryer. i live in new zealand where our power is 240v. will this product do what i need?

Can you use it for 12 V

Maybe. It depends on the current draw of the 12 volt device. The internal switch is rated at 16 amps. So if your device needs less than that on 12 V, then yes. But be aware that the plug on the end is set up for US 120 V outlets. And you would be using it for a purpose other than its stated design.
