Odd but Fab
What a strange little book this was; as an adult this was funny in a tongue-in-cheek way, but as someone who works with children I can see why this book has been such a hit with young readers... it's odd & random, with a quick pace & a talking elephant. What more could you want?

Great gift
Bought this for my 9 year old grandson and as he had just joined a book club we both had to read it and discuss what we thought. We thoroughly enjoyed it.

Amazing book
This book is amazing and I just love it, however I read it very quickly so you might want to get some of Philip Pullman's other books. Still it is a great book and has some feminism in it too.

Whoosh!
It can never be said enough, this is a little gem of a book. I enjoyed the folk tale style that reminds me of an old book of Aladdin of my dad's printed back in the 30s, so I suppose the style is nostalgic.Children will like the episodic style of the chapters with their cliffhanger endings. Lila and Chulak are good leading characters, but my favourite (and I'm sure that of many children) is Rambashi and his ramshackle pirates/waiters who get the ending they truly deserve.I'm doing this book with my guided reading group at school and I can't think of a better one to start the year with

Sheer Genius
Lila wanted to become a firework maker like her father, Lalchand, but he says she can't. So she sets off on an adventure to try and prove her father wrong.I like this book because it was written by a sheer genius, Philip Pullman, who uses language to make you feel as if you're in the the story at the time.People who are confident and determined to reach their goals would like Lila because she is very daring and confident. Also, anybody who like adventure books would love this!MW
