What is the depth of cooking surface? It says 3: "extra depth" so is it total 3 inches or extra on top of what?

The skillet is exactly 3 inches deep, measuring from skillet bottom, to edge of rim. I used a straight edge, laying it across the skillet top edge, and measured to the skillet inside bottom... 3 inches.
