The top part is 1.75 in and won't go through older 1.5 in sink opening. Had to go with the type with basket contrary to what I said earlier. Too bad. Do not get the kind with a basket!!! The stopper attaches to the basket unsecured and the stopper would not work half of the time or worse!!! This one the stopper screw hole is securely built inside the drain pipe so the stopper always works. This is my experience from several installs using this and other styles. This unit is high quality and install was easy. The large popup stopper is visually pleasing and doesn't look old school. The only negative is that the somehow hard water deposit forms calcium deposit circles on two other installs. So I just throw them in a bucket of white vinegar along with shower heads, faucet aerators, etc. and soak them overnight. I unscrewed the nut on the bottom (you need large channel lock pliers), lifted the broken one out, dropped the new one in place (using a bead of plumbers putty around both the top and bottom), and tightened the nut to hold it back in place.
