Patton Is A Must See Great Portrayal Of One Of America's Greatest WWII Generals, Warts and All
Patton came out in 1970 with all guns blazing, winning seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Franklin J. Schaffner) and Best Actor (George C. Scott, who declined to accept his award). The film starts with Patton giving a famous address to units of his Third Army before they were unleashed to breakout of Normandy in August, 1944, wherein he utters the famous lines: "No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country." Francis Ford Coppola was the original screenwriter and credits his Oscar win as making the studio geniuses let him direct the first Godfather film! (The film Patton had languished throughout much of the 1960s due to studio concerns that the public might not respond favorably to yet another WWII movie during the protests against the Vietnam conflict.) Karl Malden costars as General Omar Bradley, who served under Patton in North Africa and then Sicily, before being put in charge of planning Operation Overlord to invade mainland France in June, 1944, after Patton was relieved of command after slapping two traumatized American soldiers in August, 1943 for being "cowards". (Left out are the more serious charges that two officers under Patton's command had massacred over seventy Axis POWs who had surrendered outside of Biserte Airfield that July. Patton had not ordered the massacre but arguably allowed it to happen by emphasizing that the enemy might pretend to surrender only to attack Allied soldiers at close range with grenades and revolvers, which did happen.) Patton bristles when overruled by Bradley, once his subordinate but now his superior officer, to let his arch rival British General Montgomery delay closing the "Falaise pocket", which let many Germans escape Normandy to fight another day. When Allied forces were overrun in the December, 1944 Battle of the Bulge, it was Patton's Third Army that rescued the beleaguered US garrison at Bastogne, whose leader, Macaulife, had refused German demands to surrender with the famous one word reply: "Nuts!" Patton went on to storm the Rhine River and was appointed as military governor of Bavaria, but did not adjust to peacetime very well and was dismissed by General Eisenhower, before dying of injuries in a car accident in December, 1944. The movie avoids showing the accident, but instead ends with Patton walking off into the proverbial sunset with his pit bull, Willy, who was a bit of a wimp and no William the Conqueror, with a reference to the Latin adage: "all glory is fleeting". Overall, this is a great film with a surprising amount of gallows humor given the serious wartime content. There are some intense combat sequences, but the film managed a PG rating by eschewing much explicit gore.

This period of Patton is honest... And only fought face to face, blood brings peace.
There could be no production of from the industry which grew so slanted in the wake of such battles that were necessary to be faced and fought. With regard to Patton, the man, he was far more human and humane than realized during his time. I believe history proved that his men loved him far beyond what the press ever admitted or permitted to be printed. It is interesting to realize the counterpoint-instances in which Ike made decisions contrary to that which Bradley may have made. I believe that they were all rather honest with eachother; and, that skill, know-how, courage and honor were appreciated of each other and all. On a final note, it was pleasing to read a few articles written in the past few years inclusive of 2025, "That Patton was right!" Yes, we all know that he was right. He should have done exactly what policiticians refused to dare think... to chase the men who likely were reluctant to follow their leader, a man who killed far more innocent people than Hitler. Imagine what like could have been like (and there is certainly room for debate), had the power and tacitly signaled permission of the Iorn Curtain to be constructed before the eyes of the free world, and to be suffered by those under the control of the county for which Patton could have put down at the most opportune time. This fact is realized, and finally stated for our childrent to realize... How many suffered because of "Policitical Correctness in lieu of Godly righteousness" to see that all of Europe and Eurasia was freed instead of imprisoned until the coming of a press-despised president and a Russian leader who had great respect for our president who in fact brought down the Iorn curtain. It's naturally interesting to ponder what would have been; but, then again, it can only be remembered far better now as a lesson and an unwelcomed obligation which we may face again, someday. To do right the next time. We sure didn't do it right after cleaining out one country in the M. E. only to give it back and the cash to finance the reoccupation of that country. Then again, much of that is realized today as money that went into a few pockets, and heck, those of whom garnered profit from permitting evil to reigh in our recent 20 years do not even have to suffer the likes of managed care that they put upon us and exempted themselves to suffer this form of life-extinguising evil. War comes in many forms. I am proud of our military, I am glad to realize that today, we can fight back when we are attacked.

A good movie about WW 2.
This is an interesting film and George C Scott is great as Patton. It is about his role in WW2 as an effective, but controversial general.

Great movie for the Best General of WW2
Good overview of a great general. Really didn't show all of his great successes.

Excellent film detailing Patton during WW2. George C. Scott is magnificent as Patton. The film was nominated for 10 Oscars and Scott won for best actor. Film starts with Patton giving a speech in front of a huge American flag. Patton was a prima donna, wearing 2 colt pistols engraved in ivory. He starts in Africa, the American forces lost and besides the defeat were battle fatigued and moral was low. He comes in and demands forces wear proper battle fatigues and installing bettor moral. Americans lost battle they had Rommel tank forces to battle. Patton read up on Rommel and defeated his forces though Rommel was not involved in the battle but had returned to Germany and France during the invasion. Patton also was involved trying to outfox British forces. He returned to fight overseas with Karl Malden as second in command. He loved quoting passages from the Roman armies. With his forces he sped ahead of the British winning in Sicily. Unfortunately he got in trouble beating up a shell shocked soldier played by Tim Considine. He had to apologize for this. He lost his command and was forced to speak to English citizens about the war effort and he was demoralized. He was reinstated and found out that Malden was now in command appointed by Eisenhower. He spear headed forces to Bastogne and relieved the siege. The war ended and he disliked the Russians and then spoke out of turn when he continued to keep former Nazis to work with the Americans. There is a second disc of extras. Scott is excellent in his role as Patton. Highly recommended for all as a dramatic piece of wartime history.
