Seller: "easy clip in installation with self-adhesive 3m tape": if no clips, is it defective?

It doesn't have actual clips. It just uses the 3M tape to hold them in place. Just be sure you put the right side up or they won't fit properly.

will these work for a 2017 wrangler unlimited sport?

Yes, just installed on my 17 jku sport and they look amazing.

What is the upgrade version? Do I have to add both to my cart or just the upgrade version...?

Dear friend, if you need upgrade version, you just need add this product. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074XDRD6H/ref=twister_B074WPQ1GM?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 Have a great day. Zoe

Is this compatible with a 2021 Jeep unlimited?

No, it is not. It specifically says 2007-2017. The grille slots are not the same on a 2021, you need to look for ones made for the year wrangler you have.
