You need it for the trash can

Very good trashcan!
Trash can works as described. Previous iTouchless trashcan lasted 9 years before sensor failed. Decided to buy new trashcan rather than replace sensor. This one works perfectly. Decided to purchase AC adapter rather than use the 6 "C" batteries as required. Purchased iTouchless adapter as generic adapter did not fit.

Perfect compost bin
We use the trash can as a compost bin, where all the food waste and paper go. We got compostable trash bags along with this so that I can just throw the bag onto our compost pile when it's full. I love this product for this purpose because I used to have to open our little compost pail with hands as I was cooking, which made me have to wash hands again and again. Now I just have to walk up to the trash can and put my hand near the lid to open it. The lid keeps food waste inaccessible from our cats and it doesn't smell neither. Also, the big size and convenience of automatic lid encourage us to compost everything compostable including packaging boxes made with paper, paper towels, etc. which used to go to our landfill trash can when we were using our small compost pail.

Definitely get this if you own an auto trash can
This makes life so much more convenient. It's just one less thing to worry about with your trashcan. Using this I don't have to deal with the trash can lid being slow and weak from low battery. It may even prolong the life of the lid mechanish because the lid won't be operating slowly. This adapter really should be included with the trash can but that should be a minus point for the trash can and not for the adapter.

Convenient battery replacement
Makes it much easier to use. Batteries are kind of a pain and I have a plug right next to where the can goes so the wall wart is unobtrusive and easy to use.

Seems to be well made works flawlessly with my eye touch motion sensor garbage can.

Cheaper than using batteries
This was a good investment. The cost of 4 D batteries is slightly less, so the adapter essentially pays for itself in 6 months.
