How can I get the plastic clip on the end of the cord off to shorten the length of the cord and still keep the ends from fraying?

You shorten the cord by pressing the button on the slider and sliding it to the length that suits you.

Would this hold car keys, fob and a money clip?

Kind of a tall order, maybe 1 key a small fob and a very thin money clip.
