These are useful but not essential.
They do make the process a little easier, but they are not necessary. Unless you are loading 22 LR all day, you don't really need one of these. If you were going to fire 100 rounds in one session, yes get one.

Works Much Better Than My Other Ones
I've got several .22 LR handguns -- and their magazines have different widths. My old quick loader worked okay for the wider magazines, but kept slipping over the catch knob on the thinner magazines. Then it is stuck between the mag base and the catch knob. Bummer.This loader is made thinner and has a curved edge to hold firmly onto the catch knob. It's a very positive hold that makes the reload process much easier. This may sound like a small matter, but when you're trying to reload 6 or 7 magazines quickly, it makes a world of difference.
