What a Lot of Fun!
This is a lovely game, kind of an odd description for a 1st person shooter with all the panic I usually endure playing them. I say lovely because that's my overall impression after playing it several times. The story is touching, which again is odd, as storylines in video games seldom amount to anything more than an irrelevant matrix for the action. But the main characters here are likeable people that are easy to identify with. They each have their faults, but they still accept and depend on each other. The voice acting and the animation are well done adding a level of realism to the experience. The graphics and environments are superb from the city slums to the grandeur of the Colorado Rockies, where the scenery is almost as good as taking a vacation. When it's raining, I feel cold and wet. I can almost smell the pines. The winter hunting episode happens in crisp cold air where sitting still in the silence of a snow laden forest captures the real experience. I wanted to go live there. The first time through, it's sometimes all you can do to just stay alive, and often you don't, but one of the fun things about playing this game over and over is learning all sorts of ways to wreck havoc on the enemy, and what weapons to use in certain situations. At first, I would always try to win using the weapon with the most blasting power. But one of your options is to pick up empty bottles and throw them at enemies. You will never kill them with a bottle. You just bonk them on the head and they stand there dazed for a second or two. So what's the point? But the bottles can be extremely helpful, as you will eventually discover. Sometimes in the heat of battle, the young teenage girl you are protecting will pick up a bottle and knock an enemy in the head, often remarking something along the lines of, "I got this one," before she lets fly with an empty bottle. Then you can step in and finish the enemy off. There is one episode where Elle has nothing but a knife, and she must take out a homicidal maniac who is armed with a gun and machete, and he is unusually quick. It happens in a restaurant set ablaze at some abandoned resort. The guy was almost unbeatable, frustrating as heck, and taunting while he killed me over and over, until I learned to slow him down with a bottle to the head, and then move in and get one knife stab in him. Do that a few times, and eventually you can take him out. So some weapons that seem kind of useless can often be the best choice. This is certainly one of my favorites, maybe even my favorite game ever. But I suppose I have to find something to criticize. Well, the best I can do is to criticize the menu. You can play through the game once, and this will open up and allow you to replay interesting chapters, but until you learn what you can do in the menu and what you can't, you will probably wipe out the chapter option and have to replay the whole game again to get back to the chapter choices. I spent an inordinate amount of time learning what I shouldn't do with the menu. It just fails to act in an intuitive manner. You just have to try something and hope you don't wreck what you've worked to gain. I've got it figured out now, so I'm OK, but it should not have been as hard as it was.

24 Hours and 47 Minutes Later....
Yep...24 hours and 47 minutes is exactly how long it took me to beat this game. I suppose my title would have been cooler if it were 28 Hours Later, because the story in this game is similar to the movie 28 Days Later in a few ways. From what I hear almost 25 hours is about 8 or 9 hours more than the average player finishes the game, and it's 3 times the amount of time that I've heard some people beating the game in. But I like to search. I like to look everywhere (if it won't get me killed). I get my release day price money's worth! This game rewards you greatly with much needed limited supplies and ammo for doing so. Extensive searching in this game also helps you find collectables that really mean nothing to the gameplay, unless you're going for all the trophies. And speaking of trophies, there are not a lot of those in this game. No easy unmissable trophies for simply completing chapters. Indeed most of the trophies are for finding the collectables and completing the game on various levels, and there are 4 associated with online play. But who cares about trophies? (Me.) On to the game.... The game is way up there on one of the best I've ever played. I was a big fan of Telltale's recent The Walking Dead which is very heavy on story and a bit lighter on action and player participation; The Last of Us adds the action and player participation by 100% to a similarly story-rich game. You play (mainly) as a 40ish year old Joel tasked with escorting 14 year old Elle across a country devastated by an infectious fungal disease that has turned humanity into 28 Days Later-like maniacs (runners) that over time mutate into fungus-faced monsters (clickers). But the runners and clickers are only half of your problem. The other half?....you guessed it: humanity. I'm not going to go into a lot more since my review is well beyond 28 Days Later than the release date, and there are already a ton of reviews here that you can look at for more detail if you're not already sold on this game. But I will say this: This is no run and gun game. In fact, sometimes you will wind up dead more often than not by firing a single bullet in some situations. Other times, if you don't use your firepower you will be equally dead. Some parts of this game will seem impossible until you find the right strategy only to realize it was one of the easiest parts in the game. The AI in this game both for and against you is incredible. You will get some much needed help in a few situations, but choose the wrong tactic and the AI will shoot you down...or bite your head off. I absolutely loved this game and all of the true emotion that it is filled with. I cried. I jumped out of my seat. I laughed. I cursed (loudly). I procrastinated due to anxiety when it was time to put the game in my PS3. The Last of Us may be the PS3's Last hoorah, but the experience of this game will Last with me forever. Add The Last of Us to your cart.

Valid hype
No intention to do an in-depth review. I just want to say that I finished The Last Of Us last night, took me 21 hours, and I thought it was every bit as good as 'they' say. I've never been a huge Naughty Dog fan, frankly I thought the Uncharted games were mildly enjoyable and the gross fanboy hyperbole about them made me roll my eyes pretty hard. But from the first time I saw TLOU over a year ago, it had my attention. I never really pored over the previews, so it was all very fresh to me. Somehow it never really occurred to me that this was going to be survival horror. In recent years I've thought of Dead Space as the last bastion of something even remotely approaching classic survival horror (though it gives you way too much ammo and health items to truly qualify) but now I must hand the championship belt to TLOU. Resident Evil was George Romero style survival horror. Silent Hill was Stephen King/David Lynch style. Dead Space was Ridley Scott/John Carpenter style. And now The Last of Us is Cormac McCarthy/Michael Crichton style survivor horror. It never allows you to amass enough resources to think you can handle absolutely anything that comes your way, yet it's never overly frustrating. It maintains the perfect level of tension. The crafting system forces you to choose between making more first aid kits or molotov cocktails (which are pretty damn handy.) The stealth game play, crouching and sneaking and taking down foes unawares is every bit as fun and satisfying as I thought it would be when I saw the E3 demo last year. The story and characters shine. Troy Baker has surpassed Nolan North in the Is There Any Game This Guy Is *Not* In? category, but he does a terrific job as Joel. One of the few things that I didn't like in the early trailers was that the voice actress who plays Ellie just sounds too B-level, too cartoony (sure enough when I looked her up on IMDB I quickly confirmed she does a lot of cartoon kids shows) but in the finished product she does an excellent job. There are a good number of characters in this game, and I can't think of a weak link in the bunch. The hordes of NPC enemies all seem to be voiced by the same three or four actors, and that can be a tad distracting after a while. By the end of the game I'm pretty sure I'd murdered Fred Tatasciore at least 50 times. The only criticism I can think of is that the load and save functions are kinda broken. When you turn on the PS3 and boot up the game to start a play session, you might want to have something to read or otherwise keep you occupied, because it takes forever. I'm not talking about the first time you play i.e. one-time system file install, I'm talking about any time you boot. And if you dare to so much as open the save/load menu, you have to sit and wait while it spends an eternity auto-saving, just in case. That's my one and only complaint. At first I thought maybe it was just me, even though I have a PS3 Slim 500GB that's less than two months old and have had no loading issues with any other games... but I've since confirmed with friends that it's the same for them. Personally I'm not interested in a sequel to this game, I think it's the perfect example of a game that should be allowed to simply stand by itself. But I'll keep a closer and less jaundiced eye on Naughty Dog from now on. UPDATE: Jan. 26, 2015 - I played through TLOU a few times when it came out, and then about six months ago I played it again when TLOU Remastered was released for PS4. A few days ago I felt like playing it again, and I got all obsessive and started watching Neil Druckmann interviews and reading various people's in-depth analyses. Two things I want to say- I totally agree that the A.I. in the game is clearly inferior to what was shown in the early demos, but I didn't notice that until it was pointed out. I've seen some videos of the A.I. performing some pretty bizarre broken behaviors, but I never saw any of them in any of my play throughs. It seems equally clear to me that the A.I. flaws are generally only apparent if you go out of your way to cause them, as opposed to simply playing the game in the spirit in which it was intended. The second thing I want to say is that I changed my mind about a sequel. I still think another game starring Joel and Ellie would be pointless, but I can totally see a new game with an older Ellie in the dominant role, with a new character (or characters) in tow. Based on what I've heard him say on the matter, it sounds like Druckmann is skeptical that there would be any need for a sequel, and part of me is proud that he agrees with my original 2013 assessment! But the 2015 me hopes he finds some good fertile sequel soil.

Yeah, it's that good.
There are a few games that I consider true masterpieces. Such games excel in both storytelling and gameplay. Two games that for me reach that level of perfection are The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Uncharted 2. The Last of Us earned a spot right up there with these two. From beginning to end, I greatly enjoyed the journey Naughty Dog masterfully crafted for me. The game is beautiful to look at. It's so realistic and detailed that if you are like me it might take it you up to 20 hours to play through it all just because there's so much to explore and discover, and did I mention it's so freaking pretty to look at?! You will want to stop and stare at every set piece. There are so many stories hidden for you to find. From notes detailing a survivor's quest, to the heart breaking room in the sewers that is the last resting place of a family. It all contributes to creating an environment that is bursting with with life yet depicts the bleak reality of this wasteland. But at the heart of all these amazing production values it is Joel and Ellie's story what steals the show. The bond that develops between them as they make their way through this post apocalyptic version of America makes you care about the characters. I specially love how much they stand apart from your typical pop culture heroes. These guys are there to survive, not to save the day and I love them for that. Ellie's character is so endearing and funny. Joel's ruthlessness and seemingly lack of emotion are just as appealing in their own right. Add to this the sense of desperation and hopelessness that the game creates and you'll empathize more with these guys. I will specially remember the ending as one of the best ones in a video game. I have to admire Naughty Dog for sticking with the nature of the characters and not giving you the all too common "save the day" way out of it. It's really fitting and brings the story to a shocking but satisfying conclusion. The game play is also top notch. The scarcity of ammo and supplies make you approach every encounter with your infected or human foes differently. Item crafting and the way levels are designed give you a great amount of choice on how to beat each level. However, stealth is a key element of it, specially when dealing with the extremely dangerous infected. All in all, The Last of Us is an amazing story wrapped around an amazing game. Over the years videogames have become more and more a viable medium of storytelling. For me, The Last of Us finally delivered on this promise. I was as invested on the game as I'm on a good book, TV series, or movie.

Amazing game, but warning for the motion sick crowd - this game hit me worse than any other game so far
So there are already a ton of reviews about this game and how awesome it is, so I'm going to skip all that junk. My review is for the crowd who can't really handle FPS-style games due to "motion sickness" and eye strain-type issues. The Last of Us hit me harder than any game I've ever played. I can usually stomach games like Halo or Army of Two, and I had no issues with the previous Naughty Dog Uncharted games. That being said, if I played TLoU for longer than an hour, I'd get seriously nauseous and that "cotton-stuffed head" feeling like you're on some sort of cold medicine. The feeling would persist for a day or longer - I could not play TLoU two days in a row. I believe the reason is this - they decided to motion blur everything when you turn. If you watch any of the gameplay videos, you'll notice that when you move the camera in any direction, the game blurs everything on the screen just slightly. Absolutely everything gets just a tiny bit of blur on it. It's not a huge motion blur trail - in fact, I think if it was exaggerated, it might not be as bad - but rather a slight unfocusing. This won't bother most people, but if you're like me and in that tiny little percentage, it will bother the hell out of you, and you probably won't even notice until you've got a headache and are rubbing your eyes. It was really hard to rate this game. The story, the gameplay, all of it is really awesome. Unfortunately due to the way they decided to code the camera, its got zero "replayability" for me. My first run-through was on Hard and I didn't find all of the various knick-nacks you pick up through the course of the game, and I really wanted to go through a second play in order to pick everything up. Now however, I can't see ever touching this game ever again unless they add some sort of patch to help out folks like me. So if you're like me and don't do well with high motion type games, purchase this title with the understanding that you'll probably get a single play out of it. If you've had eye issues in the past with a few games and aren't sure if this game will affect you, watch some of the gameplay videos on fullscreen that have been recorded in at least 720p. If you can watch those and have no issues, you're probably ok (yes, they made me sick). *Note to "armchair doctors" - I know you're probably trying to help, but "turn on more lights," "play on a smaller screen," "don't focus on one thing," and etc "tips" aren't really needed, and rarely (if ever) do they work.

Survival Horror, emphasis on the Survival part.
If you've ever watched those shows on Discovery or NatGeo that takes either a group, two partners, or a single person and force them to survive in a situation where there is limited resources given and even scarcer resources to be found then you will already have a leg up on this game. Throw in the Ant-Zombie fungus that was talked about awhile back (called the Cordyceps fungus) and you have the makings of an awesome game. The story is yet another fantastic tale spun by Naughty Dog with motion capture actors playing the characters and not just the voices, beautiful environments and kick ass action moments. You play Joel, a survivor of 20 years in this world gone bad. He has to smuggle a 14 yr old tomboy, smart mouth, tough as nails young girl named Ellie to a group of resistance fighters called the Fireflies. They have to go cross-country avoiding the infected remnants of humanity and fight the even more horrific regular humans (trust me, normal humans are worse than infected zombies). This game has real human moments that I haven't really seen too many of in games, until recently I guess. Bioshock Infinite had some good ones (which also had Troy Baker who is in both of these games). I won't go into too much detail if you haven't played this game yet but you come upon another 2 person team of survivors and the moments you have with them till you part company is awesome. The ending itself is in my mind fantastic as well because it breaks the whole End Boss tradition many games used to have but is now slowly breaking away from (again, Bioshock Infinite). Again, won't spoil it but it leaves me/you the viewer/player with an ambiguous ending that leaves it up to us to interpret instead of leaving it all spelled out. Plus if they play it out right, Naughty Dog could have that be almost a cut off point for another game if they decided to go that route which I don't see why they wouldn't. The game is awesome, is getting great reviews all over, and they still have some DLC stuff to come (I'm hoping for some story based DLC as there was a pretty big distance/time gap in at least one section of the game). I opted to get the $20 season pass as well. I used to be against buying DLC things like this and usually waited until a GOTY edition where they have all the DLC in one thing but this had a cool set of things right off the bat besides the upcoming DLC they have for the future. One thing that sold me was a 90 min. Making-Of Documentary of Naughty Dog making the game and not just a few small videos that are like 2-4 min. long which was never as exciting to view as just a straight movie of the whole thing. So yeah, buy this game if you haven't. Doesn't even need a rental cause you are just gonna buy it anyway cause this game is worth playing over and over again and owning it won't incur late-fees.

Beautiful, Stunning & a Work of Art
Like the majority of people who have reviewed this, I was absolutely blown away by this game from the moment I started it up. The story was immediately engaging and there was no doubt that this was going to be a dark tale (of course a zombie apocalypse isn't going to be a sunny story). There are so many reviews I'm just going to point out what I really liked in case there are game developers out there who actually read these reviews and listen. I loved: -the graphics. Beautiful, gross, occasionally stunning. Rooms and homes were decorated in various ways which went a long way in making the game more realistic, and some of the city scenes were incredible. And the giraffes made the long journey worth the agony. -the voices. If there is a better man's voice out there than Joel's, I have yet to find it. Ellie, Tess, Tommy and Sarah were also superbly done. I love the fact that I didn't keep hearing the same voices over and over for multiple people (even Skyrim blew it on that). -the dialog. It was realistic and emotional. -the criminals. Bad to the bone from years of fighting to survive, except these people have lost their humanity in the process. They are tough, deadly and without an ounce of pity. -the music and sound effects. Beautifully done. -the storyline! There were hard choices, iffy decisions, times when they were helpless to intervene on behalf of others because it would have just thrown their lives away, and the all consuming need to see this thing through. One of the best storylines of any game I've ever played. -Ellie. One of the best portrayals of a teenager ever. Scared sh!*less most of the time but unwilling to show it. She was determined to find a way to get Joel to care for her as much as she had come to care for him. He was who she trusted. -Joel. An honorable but flawed man who lost his way after Sarah but found his way back through his ordeal with Ellie. An amazing job of making his character believable, and seeing him struggle with his increasing affection for Ellie was completely understandable, believable and ultimately fulfilling. I also loved that he was an older man. He had nothing to prove and was just doing what needed to be done. I loved him. No really. Loved him. I have always gravitated towards games like this. Adventures, quests, vanquishing evil and rooting for the underdog. Perhaps because I'm such a prolific reader, who knows. But stories like this are enjoyable on an entirely different level than non story games are (although I enjoy those too). Games with storylines that make you come to care for the characters are few and far between- Red Dead, Skyrim, Fallout New Vegas are some that come to mind at the moment, and I truly appreciate all of the people who work to make them happen. So thank you to all of the people who worked hard to bring this wonderful work of art to life.

Must Buy
I used to think the hype and the outstanding reviews were just overrated and that the game could not possibly be as good as the critics said it was; but I was wrong. The game was just fantastic. Game-play: Here is what most critics find, if anything, not up to par to the rest of the story and graphics etc. However, I loved the game play's realistic twist on third person shooters. Typically, I was used to Nathan Drake (a beloved ND hero) jumping across platforms at super human distances; but Joel and Ellie both were realistic in how they moved, shot, switched weapons, etc. The gameplay for that reason was just fantastic. I felt as if the way they sneaked around, the way I controlled them sneak around, the way they shot guns, the way they recoiled from being shot was on par to a realistic experience. The controls were great, they were responsive, crouching, hugging walls, and shooting guns all felt natural on the Dualshock 3. Story: What can I say that has not been said before. This was just breathtaking. I enjoyed the story in part because I was not given choices unlike Infamous or Mass Effect (Both great games btw). In fact, I was not asked to become the Joel, I was asked to experience his own actions, thoughts, and emotions. While I will not ruin the story for you, every character acts on their own accord. The story also inhibited a very survival-esque mood insofar as I was constantly looking through rooms and hovering over dead bodies for more ammo or supplies; in that sense, it really forced me to think like a survivor. The choices that i werre given, such as how I wanted to kill or go about dealing with a group of enemies was pretty cool in that it still let me think for myself which made the story engaging all the more. Considering that video games are experiences and entertainment, The Last of Us delivers a masterpiece. Mechanics, Graphics, etc. Just great. Not much to say here besides it is a ND game, and the graphics and the voice acting was perfect. All the characters had subtle emotions you could note thanks to the powerful engine it was running on. The weather, cities, building, everything just looked great and sounded authentic. In conclusion, you must buy this game for a thrill you simply cannot get anywhere else whether movie, etc because in this you are given a movie in which you shoot all the bad guys and directly experience what the main character feels. I am still taken back at the ending, and it still makes me think just overall of the decisions made and why they were made. While this was not some life changing experience, it was a great way to think of as a survivor in the middle of the end of mankind. I strongly urge to spend your hard earned money on this game, it is definitely worth it.

One of the best games ever made
Naughty Dogs pushed the limits of PS3 in any possible way They have achieved an exceptional target, that no other game studio could have acquired The game is awesome If you live Uncharted series, then you should have this too P.S - If you have PS4, then spend some extra money and buy it in PS4. Latest patch has given the ability to play this game in HDR in PS4 and game also runs in native 1080p @ 60FPS, compared to 720p @ 30FPS That said, it still looks exceptionally great in PS3 The best game in PS3, graphics wise
