Are we supposed to guess what size we need?** A: Choosing the Hayward Sand filter size (Model) The size of sand filter depends on the water volume of your pool and the pump flow rate you have. When it comes to choosing a filter, it must be sized to match the pump which in turn must match the circulation needs of the pool. First determine the gallons per minute your pump is currently distributing. Then, determine the filter that has a flow rate above the GPM (gallons per minute) rating. Then consider the turnover rate (Gal) you need to filter your pool properly. In general, a larger pool filter will give you better water with less maintenance. The Hayward web site includes a chart which should help you. Our pool contains 17,500 gal. of water, the flow rate will turn over 47,000 gal. in 8 hours. The installation was relatively easy if you are handy. Note that the variflo must be purchased separately. So far so good. I've been running the filter for about a month and the pressure is low and my pool has never been cleaner.ps. Use teflon tape liberally and you should have no leaks. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.0 out of 5 stars Do not overtighten! *by C***R on Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2019* I had this filter installed about 5 years ago by a local pool service. Over the past year or so it had started leaking out the top and my naive response was to backwash (which was correct) but also to tighten the clamp at the top. If I had read the installation manual I would have seen that it warns against this. The result is that the rim eventually showed signs of stress and I was afraid that it would eventually fail catastrophically. So I ordered this replacement filter.What I probably should have done instead of tightening the clamp when it was squirting water out the top was replace the sand. I have since learned that the sand needs to be replaced every 5 years or so. As I was removing the old sand I observed that it was full of debris that would not be removed by backwashing. This was probably also due to my lazy maintenance of the baskets in the skimmer and pump. I will be much more vigilant going forward.The hardest part of this installation was draining the old filter and removing the sand to the point that I could move the sucker. The drain is badly engineered and is blocked by a screen that is supposed to prevent the sand from draining out. I ended up breaking that out in order to get the thing to drain. Even then I had to continually poke a screwdriver in the drain to keep it clear. Otherwise it would slow down to a drip.After I finally got the old filter rolled out of the way the installation of the new filter was uneventful. I ended up using some of the old sand at the bottom because I was using Zeosand in the new filter and I read that it likes some normal sand at the bottom to help it. So far so good. Following the Zeosand instructions, I backwashed a couple of minutes and it quickly ran clear. Afterwards I set the system to filter and the pressure rose up to 20 psi. Now I am just filtering the pea soup that my pool has become since the filter has been out of commission for a week or so. From experience I know I should backwash a couple of times and keep an eye on the pressure to make sure the filter does not clog up with algae. In the meantime I am adjusting the pH and adding chlorine as necessary. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5.0 out of 5 stars This one runs great.
