Excellent "universal lite" remote
Amidst the hustle and bustle of moving to a new place, I lost the remote for my Samsung TV. Instead of getting a new remote for Samsung, I decided to give this PS3 remote a try. It worked out perfectly. Programming is a standard fare for a universal remote in this price range -- you find your TV's model from the manual, and enter the corresponding code into the remote. There were 4 different codes for Samsung TV, and I had to try them one by one, and as my luck would have it, it was the last one I tried that worked for my TV. But once the correct code was entered, it worked beautifully. Not only did it handle the basic functions like volume, channel, and input selection, the remote could even navigate the TV's setting menu, which I found to be a very pleasant surprise. Pressing the Subtitle button (the one you would normally press while watching DVD/Bluray) while the remote is in TV mode let me turn on/off the Closed Caption function of my Samsung television too. I have absolutely zero need for a Samsung remote now. And of course, pairing the remote with my PS3 was a cinch. All in all, from unwrapping the packaging, to inserting the included 2xAAA batteries into the remote, to pairing it with PS3, and to finding the right code for my TV, the whole set-up process took maybe 10 minutes. Probably less. I should mention that I've been a console gamer for 20+ years now. That is to say, using a game controller like the PS3 controller is a second nature to me. I have no problem using the DVD/Bluray function with the PS3 controller. But my guests don't share my familiarity with the PS3 controller, and that was the primary reason why I decided to get this remote. But now that I've actually used it, I find that it really *is* easier to control the DVD/Bluray function with the remote than with the PS3 controller. One feature I really like is the 15-second skip function. Normally, that function is accessed by pressing the triangle button on the PS3 controller, and then selecting the correct icon. In other words, it takes multiple button/d-pad presses with a PS3 controller, and consequently, I've never used it. But the remote has a dedicate set of buttons for that function (backward and forward). So if I miss a bit of dialogue or action while watching a film, instead of rewinding and playing back again, I just have to press one button, and it instantly goes back 15 seconds. This is really, really convenient. One minor negative is that, like another reviewer mentioned, the weight balance feels off. It's rather top-heavy, which is accentuated by the fact that the volume and channel buttons are located way at the bottom of the remote. It's not a big deal, and you quickly learn to get used to it, but it's one of those minor details that you wish Sony had gotten right. For those who use their PS3 as their primary DVD/Bluray playback device, I can wholeheartedly recommend this remote. This is one of those items that I did not know I needed until I tried it.

14 years later, still perfect
I bought this when it released 14 years ago (as of 2022) back in 2008. Still, after many years later it works perfectly. Only the letters written for ENTER in the middle of the button as worn out a little bit, not the button itself which is in great condition, just the lettering which has no impact. Other than that all letters are in perfect condition. I used this remote for many years and recently started using it again for my ps3 because the Xbox Series X has the exact same application for Blu ray as the Xbox One X which used the Xbox one from 2013 as the bases. In other words, it's a completely terrible Blu-ray player and probably the most expensive worse Blu-ray player, but that is not why you buy the series X or an Xbox in general. On the other hand the ps3, ps4 and ps5 have excellent players. Specifically the ps3 has the most options available amongst all Blu ray players. While it does not do 4K Blu ray it does Blu ray so very well. I can not over estimate how well ps3 performs still to this day compared to all systems AND stand alone players (I also own a Sony Blu ray player). It's so fast and continues/resumes playback quickly. The series X gives me a headache with DVDs, which I own and use plenty of. Especially of older anime and shows. It sometimes will get stuck for no reason when RR and FF even just a minute or two, so randomly. Another huge point between the two is that currently I am watching an older TMNT dvd from 2010s and the quality (maybe because it's 480p to 4K) doesn't look great on the series X BUT it does look very good on the ps3. Anime looks fine either way because it's bright but live action stuff or CGI does not for modern Xbox vs ps3. Which is why I've decided to use my ps3 for dvds alongside this remote and the classic Gold headsets when needed. To not get too far away from the review of this remote, that is to say again what an excellent remote this is. Unfortunately it does not work with any other AV receivers that aren't Sony. It worked with my 2013 model Sony. I now use a Yamaha and the ps3 doesn't accept any 3 digit codes I've tried during my research. It'll constantly blink letting you know it didn't accept the code. The tv code works well for the LG C1 and it controls the receiver volume via eArc so no issues with volume control. I was only looking to turn the receiver off with it so I wouldn't have to use three remotes or phone app that sometimes doesn't work as I switch sound to headphones. I wish these remotes were more universal and made in continuation over the ps4 and especially ps5 media remote that I both own. The ps4 remote started to malfunction over the years and while the ps5 remote works fine the buttons are terrible and can be hard to press. This remote is still by far the best remote I personally feel ever made between all gaming consoles. The popular Xbox remotes need IR and van be a pain to control depending on where your console is located. If you're reading this in the future and somehow using your ps3 as I am and find this control for cheap, buy it. Even if it helps one person I'd be glad I could help.

A step up from its predecessor
The original Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Disc Remote was elegant, and had a nice appearance. It had a finish that set it apart from other remote controls and made it less cheap looking. It's a Bluetooth remote control, as is needed for the PS3, which made it a special purpose non-learning remote control that couldn't even perform basic functions on other devices. And its button layout was considered a fatal flaw by many, myself included, and was enough incentive to get me to buy this remote control despite having a working one. As a remote control in general, both have the advantage as Bluetooth remote controls of not needing line of sight. They will work from under blankets and need not be aimed. That might give a false impression of over-sensitivity since merely tapping the remote control can inadvertently turn on your PS3, and turn on your TV and/or change the source to the PS3 if you use Bravia sync. For me, this is less of a problem with this new model, since I can "lock" the remote by pressing the "amp" button. That disables the functionality of everything except for a Sony amp, which I don't have. Which brings me to the limitation that the amp functions only work with Sony products. In addition to PS3 and amp control, there is also control for your TV. This is a hybrid remote control with IR capability to give it compatibility with typical televisions, and this remote control can be programmed to work with most popular ones. It's not a learning remote per se, but has profiles for most common models of televisions. The button layout is generally better, and the stop button is no longer placed directly between the play and the pause button, as on the previous model. Especially with earlier PS3 firmware, the old model created the anguish of needing to restart Blu-ray discs completely and walking through all menus and warnings after an inadvertent button press. The buttons with the four colors were moved below the menu and display buttons, and the order of the colors was changed, which is the only perplexing change I noticed. Since the menu and display buttons are likely more commonly used, that wasn't a clear advantage, but if you use buttons by feel it shouldn't take long to get used to those buttons. But all my other remotes, including this one's predecessor, have the red and green buttons on the left, followed by blue and yellow in no particular order. This has yellow, blue, red and green, making it consistent with nothing I own. There are added "instant" buttons for moving forward or backward 15 or 30 seconds, the lack of which was frustrating. My television has a PS3 and a media center computer both hooked up with HDMI cables, and the sheer awkwardness of navigating a Blu-ray disc with the PS3 made a computer with a media center remote much more appealing. This remote finally has all the basic buttons needed to watch a disc, and move around without extraordinary effort. This remote control will also allow you to control other basic features on a television such as turning it on or off, selecting the source, setting the mode to 3D, and adjusting or muting the volume. But if you have a home theater and are using this for Blu-ray discs, chances are you aren't using the volume control for the television to adjust the sound. So for me, the extra buttons boil down to a way of turning the TV off or setting the source to something else. It's convenient being able to do so without switching remote controls. And the keypad now has the "dot" button so the remote control can be used easily for watching ordinary television channels. Ironically, for each complaint about being able to turn on the PS3 too easily (and by accident) there seem to be almost as many complaints about the lack of an "off" button for the PS3. The PS3 is designed to be turned off using menu navigation, and perhaps the lack of an off button is a plus. I have other devices such as televisions with built in Netflix, and an inadvertent press of a button can't be corrected simply by pressing it again. Holding down the PS3 button for two seconds and pressing enter twice will turn off the PS3, so it's easy to turn off if you switch it on by mistake, hard to turn off by accident, and you will need to get to the XMB menu before you can turn things off this way. Again, that has the advantage of not accidentally leaving a particular area such as Netflix or Amazon video. So on balance, I'd consider the lack of an off button a plus. But you can turn off your television with a single button, and turn it back on if you turn it off by mistake. Overall, aside from the strangeness with the color buttons, the layout of the buttons is good. It allows me to use the PS3 as a media player with this as the sole controlling device, which is all a remote control needs to do. The added ability to turn off the TV or change the source are the only functions I'm sure to need to perform to use (or stop using) the PS3, making this remote control comprehensive enough to do what I need. And for those who say the functionality is limited compared to learning remotes, try to get a learning remote to work with a PS3 and you will see why this remote control is needed and why other controls are limited.

Essential for couch potatoes
I recently returned home after visiting some family for winter break, and I was surprised to find that my TV remote had gone missing. For a few weeks I was having to get up and down from my futon in order to turn the TV on and off. This wasn't a HUGE deal, but it definitely made me miss my control. I had had my eye on this product for a while, but never jumped on it because there was honestly no need too. The PS3 controller itself is more than adequate when it comes to managing Netflix and Blu-rays. But, since I lost my TV controller, I decided to buy this control once and for all. It's a great controller. Easy to use, very light, and easy to set up. It really does make it pretty awesome now that I can virtually control everything with this one remote control. I now only use my PS3 control when I want to play a video game instead of using it to control all the functions on Netflix and any movie I watch. For the price, this device is pretty awesome. I would completely recommend it to anyone who loves having streamlined controls. One remote, dozens of functions.

Does everything I needed
I was looking for a cheap game controller when I found this. I had just signed up for Hulu and Amazon instant videos and found that I had to recharge my game controllers every day because they where on the whole time I was watching TV. I figured there were only so many charges in a game controller and didn't want to ruin one of my good controllers. I do not have a fancy home theater - basically just my Playstation and a Panasonic TV. The TV linked easily to this remote - granted I haven't tried all the control buttons but it turns the set on/off, volume up/down, channels up/down and changes inputs - that is all I need done. Works great with the PlayStation on the services and when watching blueray movies. Read reviews that said PS would come on whenever a button on the remote was touched - they must have fixed this. I have to switch it to Playstation, then hit the PS button like you do for a game controller. I can't speak to how this would link up with other devices (only other one with a switch button on the remote is for an amp) but for what I have and how I'm using it, it works great. Highly recommend.

A must-have remote for every PS3 owner and an improvement over past remote.
Nothing is worse than using a dualshock controller to navigate on the playstation 3. Whether you use it for browsing on netflix/amazon VOD or using it on playstation store, this remote is really needed. First, you are bumbling around with the dualshock because you have to use 2 hands to hold the dualshock controller. Then, you are trying to figure what button does what. This Sony PS3 media/blu-ray remote control really solves that problem. Design= It is longer and thinner than the original sony ps3 media/blu-ray remote control which I was a fan of. With it being thinner, some people may think it has a "cheaper" feel over the original remote. Very similar to the old remote in terms of design but the the new remote has larger number buttons but smaller scan/slip buttons, nice plastic "glass" PS button and has a better feel of up, down, left, right circular button. The old remote used 2 AA batteries and the new remote uses 2 AAA batteries. More energy efficient I guess. Features= It does everything that the old remote did but they improved it by adding input button, amp and tv power button, 3D button, devices button, instant scrolling button and the volume & channel button. More user friendly and less clutter is a big deal. That is a huge improvement over the old remote. It was annoying when you had to use a tv remote with the old sony blu-ray remote where you needed the correct setting. I guess that I can put away my tv remote in a draw and leave it there. Price= Very fair and reasonable price. Cons? People say backlit but I don't think that is necessary because you have such a great feeling of up, down, left, right circular button which you would be using mostly. I would say that a con would be that the stop and pause button is much smaller than the old remote. Space is limited on the remote due to the new feature buttons so they went with smaller stop and pause buttons. I prefer the bigger stop and pause button of the old remote. That pause button is used a lot for netflix and dvd/blu-ray playback. *I give this remote a 4.5 out of 5 stars and I highly recommend it.

This is great for the non-player portion of the family
My preferred gaming device is my computer, I only play certain PS3 exclusive games. The PS3 has become more a entertainment center for my wife and kid that it is being used to play video games. The complicated part is while they know how to use the PS3 dualshock controller, they are always dropping it or hitting it while they watch movies or netflix. They try to have the controller resting on the arm rest of the sofas and more than likely it ends up on the floor. I was growing tired of this as I knew that it may damage the controller in the long run and that's when I discovered this remote control. We have used for over a week and it works perfectly. You have do some setting in your PS3 console, but it doesn't take more than 5 minutes or less. It recognized my old Bravia TV. Getting the hang of it can be complicated as you have to select what device you are using, but one you know what buttons to press, it works wonders and you can control everything with it. Being flat it rests easier on the arm rests and while I can't ensure it won't get damaged by falling to the floor again, at least it is a lot cheaper than a regular playing controller.

Typical Sony junk
This remote is on par with pretty much everything Sony has made since 2002: junk. This remote will last for about a year before the same thing always happens. At some random point a year after purchase, you press the PS3 button to control your PS3. But, you find the remote won't control the PS3 at all because the PS3 button is now flashing repeatedly! The TV power and other TV buttons still work, but who needs that? You didn't pay $25 just to have a 2nd device to control your TV. You paid that much money to Sony so you can control audio and video playback. But, why should Sony care? They've already gotten your money. This is the 2nd of these TV compatible remotes I've had and both had to be replaced for the same reason. The flashing PS3 button and the remote no longer even powering on the PS3 because it's stopped sending PS3 control signals to the device. Maybe now you'll understand why I'll never own a PS4, PS5, or any Sony product in the future. Sony quality has fallen off the cliff since 2002. My 2002 PS2 needed its entire drive assembly replaced after a year. Yet, surprisingly, my 2000 PS2 STILL works. I had to get Sony to replace my defective PS3 because it didn't play Blu-Ray movies. I had a Sony Optiarc that needed replacing after 6 months because on ejecting the drive tray, touching the tray to remove the disc would RELOAD the tray! I had a Sony BD-RE I returned to the store because it died before it had even been written to 5 times! The last PS2 I had was a top loader and I would have returned it if the eBay seller allowed it because it played back DVD's with skips. Because top loaders were ALWAYS the main issue with the PS1. So, Sony fixed that with the PS2 original release. THEN put back in the top loaders because they're cheaper to manufacture. The PS3 started with a front loading mechanism but was replaced with I bet is just as problematic top loader because it's cheaper. Bottom line: because you can get about a year's worth of use out this device, that kept me from giving this item 1 star. However, be aware you'll probably not get a long lived device with your unit.

Turn your PS3 into a family friendly SMART Blu-Ray player
This remote is great value for money, it turns your Play Station 3 into a home media device that you mum can use! I have to disagree with the previous comment that this remote is hard to use in the dark, all major functions can usually be control from the centre 'wheel' device for playback, I speak from experience. Also unlike other remotes Sony have a real advantage here over nearly every other device, it's blu-tooth, so you don't need light of sight to your playstation (we keep it tucked away), so virtual zero effort is require. This version also has the advantage of being able to add two additional infra-red devices. It comes with a list of codes and the ability to scan through searching for the right code. I gave up quickly on our amp which wasn't listed, but works great on our Sony TV, our remote is on it's last legs so this was an additional bonus.

Great DVD Remote for Playstation
Received it quickly and use it often as we watch a lot of DVD's on our Playstation 3. Prefer this model to the older ones that we have seen - more usable and easy to use features. This is definitely an original Sony product - not a knockoff.
