Prime-Line Door Strike Plate, Satin Nickel, Fits 5-1/2 & 6 in. Spacing

It is pretty soft metal. Prime Line and Defender are the same company. Defender brand is how this product is packaged and those are the cheap 4" and 6" brass strike plates at HD/Wally etc. Now this is a decent grade product and better than the HD/Wally junk but not even close to Don Jo etc which is real 12ga steel. I don't know what this metal is but I can bend it in the middle with significant pressure but that is not truly relative to its holding power. A thief would have to bust out the screws and 2x4 as well as the plate so it is pretty secure. This model does have a very nice nickel finish on it for the price. If you change out the screws for 3 inch stainless screws for another dollar it will hold really good. Actually you only need the 6 screws that will go into the frame. It doesn't matter the quality of the 1.5" screws much because they are only going into the 3/4" jamb. I managed to get 8 screws to bite into the frame but I removed the door outer molding so I could see where the screws were going. It was easy to chisel out the print for plate and I was pleased with the install. This product is also much easier to install than a larger or longer quality strike plate. The 1/2 inch tabs are a nice touch to add some stability too. All in all I am pleased with the purchase after installing it and it looks nice. It is way more hassle to install an 18" to 48" professional strike plate at $25 to $65+. This is kind of a nice happy medium for quality, installation and price. I was going to take a star away for being soft metal but it is priced good for what you get and I don't see it really having much impact on the situation.

It's absolutely perfect. Feels really sturdy in your hand, and extremely solid once mounted. It works on my door without the need to chisel out the frame to recess it, so I saved a frustrating hour of life and just slapped it over the old recessed spots, and you can't even see them. Its finish also matches my Schlage doorknob and dead bolt exactly.

Most residential doors come with thin little strike plates held in by half-inch screws. One solid kick and they are done. This is not that. The Defender Security U 10385 replaces both your deadbolt and latch strike plates with a single combined unit, and comes with six 3-inch screws that actually reach into the door framing rather than just the jamb. That is the key difference. Longer screws mean the plate is anchored into the structural part of the frame, which meaningfully increases resistance to forced entry. Installation is manageable for most DIYers. The plate may require some light mortising to sit flush, which takes a sharp chisel and about ten minutes. Pre-drilling for the long screws is strongly recommended before driving them in by hand. Power-driving the 3-inch screws risks cracking the jamb. The satin nickel finish is clean and low-key, and the steel construction feels reassuringly solid. The taller latch and bolt openings accommodate slight door settling or misalignment, which is a nice practical touch. For the price, this is one of the easiest security improvements you can make to an exterior door. Not glamorous, but genuinely effective. If you have not looked at what is currently installed on your door, take a look. You will probably want to upgrade it.

This larger strike plate with 3inch nails provides much better security than the small individual strike plates and short nails that are typically found in homes. Just using long 3-3 1/2 inch nails that will go beyond the door frame and into the stud drastically improves the security of the door from being forced open. The added long strike plate will distribute the force to further secure the door. It’s a good upgrade but personally I like the door armor kits that have a very long strike plate, hinge guards, and door lock guards. They provide the best reinforcement protection to secure a door.

Put these on all our doors. Makes it much harder for someone to kick your door in. Long screws. Also they don't get out of place like single plates. Everyone should replace their 2 singles with these.

I got 2 of these door strikes to reinforce my front and side exterior doors. I recently installed a deadbolt lock into my side door, but had problems aligning the 2 latches with the door strike holes. Turns out the problem was that the original door latch (not the deadbolt) was misaligned, so the 2 holes didn't quite line up. This door strike fixes that problem. The 2 latch holes in this door strike are much wider, which gives the 2 misaligned latches (door knob latch and deadbolt latch) room to both fit into one single door strike. And on top of that, this door strike is MUCH more secure than having separate door strikes. See attached photos. Before - 2 separate door strikes with 2 small screws (less than 1") each. Total of 4 screws. After - one large door strike with 2 holes and nine (9) screws - 6 of which are 3" long for more security. You do have to drill 1/8" pilot holes for the longer screws, but that's not a problem. This door strike looks great and I highly recommend it.

The soil here is clay so things shift often. Our door wouldn't close, so we swapped out our tiny plates for this one which has larger openings so shifting doesn't effect the door closing. I also like that it's one solid piece, adding security as well.

I have a beautiful craftsman style door with three raised panels and three windows, but the frame/jamb and possibly the door too, is made of mdf. It was a pricey door professionally installed and we have received many compliments on it. But, now that security is actually an issue in our changing society, the door and lock strength is a problem. The first change that everyone needs to make is to remove the small screws and individual strike plates, and replace them with this or similar product. The plate must be screwed into the house framing, or it’s only pretending to be secure. This combined strike plate is wide, thick, strong, and is the first easy cheap step in securing the door. I didn’t even need to mortise it into the jamb, there is so much space, but I did need to deepen the hole to accommodate the tongue inside the lower non deadbolt hole. It’s possible a hammer strike would have sufficed, but to avoid splitting the fake wood, I chiseled and cut it deeper. Also, the curved strike area needed to be accommodated with a bit of removal of material underneath. The back screw holes are in far enough to reach the house framing, and the front shorter screws keep it flat. I did need to file a bit of the inside edge of the deadbolt hole as it was a bit rough and rubbing the bolt. This was a great improvement to two of my doors, front and back, an inswing and an outswing, bronze and stainless, respectively. Excellent product at a great price.
