Five Practice Makes Perfect Books in One: Complete Italian Grammar; Italian Verb Tenses; Italian Conversation; Italian Sentence Builder; Italian Problem Solver Review: A Great All-Around Study Book. - I have used several of these types of study books before, but think this is one of the better ones. It is perfect for someone who is perhaps at the intermediate level of the study of Italian. It provides good review summaries of grammar, good learning exercises, and also has answers at the back of the book so that the user can check her/his progress. Review: The best Italian book - Hands down a great book for self study. The book is divided into 5 sections: conversation, grammar, verbs, sentences, and problem solving. I love the organization of the material in each section. My only critique is that I want to skip sections and learn grammar & verbs in conjunction with conversation. However, I think working in consecutive order still gives you a solid foundation to self teach. I don't mind the tissue thin pages because I prefer a lightweight book to carry around. Highly recommend!

Great as a supplement
Excellent practice, lots of opportunity to repeat a skill until you get it. I also use the app and it is great for pronunciation. Disclosure, I use this book in addition to using Babel. Not sure if I would understand it as well if it was the only thing I was doing. But...it fills in all of the gaps I had from Babbel

useful overall
it's a good book with a lot of exercises. It has good section on basic Italian. Sections 2 and 3 allow to learn grammar in more depth. The only problem are sections 4 and 5 which seem to be an afterthought. The same grammar rules were often repeated. There was some extra info but not much. Exercises in those sections at times were good, at times were quite lacking. The author(s) also did not proof-check sufficiently for errors and typos. It was a bit frustrating. Thus taking one star off.

A perfect Exercise Book!
This book is a nice blend of instruction, explanation, and exercises. All answers are given in the back of the book, although it is a little difficult to find/read the correct answers. I really love their method of teaching, and it goes in a very good pace.

Some drawbacks to this compilation book
This book combines five different McGraw Hill books: Italian Conversation, Complete Italian Grammar, Italian Verb Tenses, Italian Sentence Builder, and Italian Problem Solver. Each book is abridged and edited for this compilation. The benefits are of course that you can do a pretty vast survey here in one book instead of purchasing and working through five. But there are drawbacks. These books are well-written and designed, but the most prominent shortcoming is in the editing. There are semi-frequent errors in the answer key, occasionally in an exercise, and with notable frequency in the App. Generally these are easily spotted and don't cause much trouble or confusion. The lack of attention to detail, though, clearly exacerbates the problems of abridging and editing five books together. Chapters and lessons drop out, but the text is not edited to reflect that the grammar and vocabulary hasn't been addressed. So while studying, the reader will continually be met with the expectation of words and constructions that haven't been addressed. (You should have a dictionary handy, the Glossary also seems to have suffered from the editing process and many words are missing). This is not an enormous problem until the third section of the book, on Verbs. Here a lot of things have been cut and re-ordered and can be very confusing, particularly with English-to-Italian exercises with missing vocabulary. They also seem to have curiously excised all of the parts that discuss irregular verbs when new tense/mood constructions are gone over, which will confuse you when they pop up in the exercises and lessons. I went through the unabridged Complete Grammar book aside from this, and have to say that it was a much better way to learn the verbs. Overall my experience with the book was very good, and I wish I could give a recommendation without reservation. Unfortunately, it is the case that the books do lose something in the compilation process, and the unabridged versions are far superior. Still, for economic reasons, and maybe just not to have five more books lying around, this is an excellent value and will still take you pretty far.

Mission Accomplished! (Missione compiuta!)
As a professional author myself, my highest hope for any book I write is that it is well-received by my reader, delivering the message and purpose for which I wrote it. My goal is to educate, challenge, provoke thinking or just plain entertain. So when I read another author's work that accomplishes perfectly what I demand of myself, I take quick notice. Such is my opinion of this author's work. This book perfectly educates, challenges, provokes thinking and yes, at times, even entertains. This book far exceeds my expectations in a language course and I highly, highly recommend it to anyone wishing to learn (or teach) the Italian language. It is well written and even better organized. It is thorough and complete. You will not regret spending the money to buy this book. And the online application that accompanies the book is brilliant!
