Troy Technologies | Universal Wheelchair Backrest Comfort Extension

Received this item today, 10 days after placing order. Attached the handle extensions to my mother's new 20" wide wheelchair, and the fabric backrest is WAY too short -- when left straps are fastened around the left handle extender, the right straps of the backrest don't even touch the right handle extension, much less wrap securely around it. This product might work well for a narrower wheelchair, but it is NOT a "universal" wheelchair backrest extension that will fit any width wheelchair, as the product description and name imply. Also, FWIW, the clamps that came with the handle extensions are not the same as those in the product pictures (single clamps rather than double as the picture seems to imply). The clamps seemed to work fine, but with the handles installed on the outside of the 20" wide wheelchair (as pictured) the fabric backrest is not long enough, and there is no way to install the handles on the inside of the wheelchair's existing handles. I have filed a claim asking for a backrest that is long enough; if not available or provided I will request a refund.UPDATE 8/5/2015: I received an email from Troy Technologies saying they will make a backrest that is long enough to fit & ship it to me; it will take about a week. Increasing my rating from 1 to 3 stars based on their customer service & willingness to make/provide suitable product, Will update after replacement arrives.

Handles are too short for a short backed wheelchair, would have been nice to have the option of 4" to 6" extension handles. Could only use one set of clamps to get the headrest as high as possible, handles would swivel and required frequent readjustment. Otherwise the headrest, clamps and handles are of good quality.

cheap construction. overprioced

Well-built, sturdy and well-designed extension. We used this on a 16" Medline K3 basic lightweight wheelchair. It has high-quality, vinyl coated bicycle-style quick-releases for the clamp mechanisms and the extension bars are very solid and sturdy. They seem to be the same strength of steel that the wheelchair is made from. The only thing is that if you want it angled/reclined some you have to use only one set of clamps and clamp it onto the curved part of the original handles, but it was still very sturdy as a headrest. The extensions aren't really strong enough to use as alternate handles though, which is how it is designed. I'm guessing it was originally meant for a child-size wheelchair that might have very low handles.
