Because the basket enables better airflow from under the charcoal, I get a more even burn and am better able to just use the damper slider on the bottom and damper on the chimney to control the temperature. If I want to long slow burn, I can fill this basket up pretty much and then just light in the center of it.... get it going and then restrict the air flow. I have much better luck with lump charcoal.
