A Jazz Band As Good As Any Of Its Time

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2014*

Go to Disc B, track 25: "At The Clambake Carnival." That track belongs on any top-100 recordings of the Swing Era. But somehow it escaped my attention--and I'm an ardent jazz fan! Maybe it's because I thought of Cab Calloway as an entertainer and not a band leader. Maybe I thought only of all those reefer songs he recorded that were on every marijuana music anthology. I ignored the fact that Cab's band played host to two of the greatest tenor sax players in jazz history: Ben Webster and Chu Berry. I forgot that Dizzy Gillespie recorded some of his greatest pre-bop solos with this band. This excellently remastered 4-CD set from JSP Records has yet to be put on my shelves because I play parts of it every couple of days. If you don't think of Cab Calloway as a jazz immortal, do yourself a favor and buy this set. You won't believe what you've been missing.

Picks Up The Heat,Capturing The Era On Another JSP Find

*by J***G on Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2007*

An almost needed companion to the 1st JSP collection "The Early Years" 1930-1934,these 4 Cd's are remastered by by Ted Kendall, features colourful artwork, linernotes, and the flamboyant leader of a man that was the entertainer Cab Calloway and his groups of great swing and Jazz men. This is a recomendation for those that are skeptical on these JSP sets that I find infectious, since this company are known as quality coming out with their arsenal of box sets that are always packed with stellar sounding music that fans appreciate presented as bargains which they are paying homage to historical music, always with taste, good sound and providing an almost needed service to those still into collecting Cd's rather than the downloading of a single.I never found a bad JSP set and that includes my Louis Armstrong Hot 5's and 7's, Charlie Parker, Jelly Roll Morton, Eddie Condon,Django, Duke's early sides,Breaking Out Of New Orleans, and now these 2 sets of Cab.For the Jazz and Blues Aficionado, JSP is a well known for those of you uncertain, you can be sure you are getting a good deal.

    Fantastic Collection!

*by F***W on Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2014*

I've been looking for a good thorough collection of Cab Calloway's songs for a while now, and this is the best I've found. This is the second of a set of two (The Early Years is the first), and I suggest fans buy both. Not only are there great recordings, but the history notes in each CD booklet are fascinating.A great buy for Cab fans, music fans, and history fans alike!
