Perfect but expensive
It is perfect but expensive. Very portable and durable. It will last a life time. The sleek look is very attractive as well.

FAIL !
This particular Blackwing one-step sharpener is dull and/or defective. As far as pencil sharpening, I look for a solid, unbroken shaving (in addition to a sharpened pencil point). This one is extremely choppy (resulting in minced bits of shavings). The blade is extraordinarily dull and blunt...like butter knife blunt. The sharpening pencil process takes WAY more than the estimated sharpening turns of 5 to 15 rotations (per Blackwing), as in 85+ to 100+ rotations (?!) This is the case with new unsharpened Blackwing pencils and previously sharpened (but needed a sharper point) pencils. Additionally, the sharpener has to be opened, and the internal sharpener blade must be blown out (compressed air duster spray) at least every 10 - 15 turns to dislodge the excess wood and graphite bits that accumulate and stick to the blade. So, what's up with this sharpener? I can't tell if it is previously owned and returned merchandise (although it wasn't identified as "open-box" or returned on the Blackwing Amazon store listing), defective, or what. The one thing Amazon has going for it is super-fast shipping and easy returns, so it isn't like I can't initiate a return; drop it at the local UPS store and obtain a refund. But the fact that the return process is simple isn't the point. ✎﹏﹏﹏﹏ I've used 99¢ pencil sharpeners that created a better point than this Blackwing sharpener. I reached out to Blackwing support regarding the total failure of their one-step (aka 100 rotations sharpener), and they offered to replace the malfunctioning unit, but the problem isn't just its inability to sharpen (defective blade). The mandatory and constant blowout of the internal blade area (every few turns) to release the wood and graphite obstruction is too much work. I'm going with the Raymay Fujii KUM Masterpiece Pencil Sharpener. The Blackwing one-step is cool looking. Love the weight and heft of the pressed aluminum exterior and matte black powder-coated surface. But it doesn't work.

Lighthouse keeper who never yawns at the fog
Behold, dear reader, a pencil sharpener not merely of metal and screw, but of fate itself. It sits upon my desk as if carved from a segment of the Mississippi’s own iron will, sturdy as a riverbank that has outlived a thousand storms. If a man were to measure sturdiness by the weight of his worries—by the stubbornness of his will to press forward—this contraption would be a mountain, and I a hopeful mole, burrowing through its granite with the cheerful persistence of a boy who believes a sharpened dream lies just beyond the next shingle of shade. Its blade, ah, its blade! A gleaming sliver of moonlight caught in a tool’s teeth, so sharp that it seems to coax the pencil to surrender its very soul. One might fear that such keen edge could sever not merely wood, but the very fabric of a tailwind’s whisper. Yet it does but coax forth the slender cedar’s sigh and deliver a point so precise that the universe—if it had one—might remark, with a tincture of melancholy and awe, that perfection, when girded in steel, is often tragically uncomplicated. In use, the thing behaves with the quiet dignity of a preacher who never shouts but always lands a truth. You insert a stubby, wayward stick of graphite, and the world loosens its grip; shavings fall like delicate snowfall upon a parlor rug of yesterday’s regrets. The grip is sturdy, the mechanism sure, and the whole affair feels as if it were built to outlive our most ambitious New Year’s resolutions and our least loyal promises to the future. There is a wit to its practicality that would make even a starving poet smirk in the gloom. It does not clatter for attention, yet it demands respect—like a ledger that balances itself in the night, or a lighthouse keeper who never yawns at the fog. You use it once, you hear the quiet, satisfied click, and you know you have witnessed the fusion of purpose and polish in a form unassuming yet irreproachably noble. Yet I confess a shade of Poe’s own shadow lingers here: not in gloom, but in the inevitability of its design. It seems to whisper that objects of such unyielding reliability are rare motes in a world of broken promises and disposable napkins. To own it is to accept a certain solemn weather—no tempest needed—where one’s handwriting might finally befriend gravity and gravity herself might bow to a point. In sum: this sharpener is not merely a tool; it is a compact creed carved in black chrome. It is sturdy enough to endure the long march of days, sharp enough to remind us that clarity is a discipline, and wry enough to remind us that virtue, when forged by steel, sometimes wears the modest grin of necessity. If you seek a companion for your pencils that will outlast your paperwork, your excuses, and perhaps your sense of irony, this is your steadfast, gleaming fellow traveler. - with respect and gratitude, Brian

The final boss of pencil sharpeners—built for Blackwing, but ruined me for everything else
I bought a 12-pack of Blackwing pencils and figured I’d just use whatever sharpener I had lying around. Huge mistake. Those pencils deserved better, and this one-step long point sharpener absolutely delivers. This isn’t just a sharpener—it’s an experience. The aluminum body feels like a precision tool, not some plastic throwaway. It’s got heft, it’s got grip, and it doesn’t look like something that belongs in a kid’s pencil case. The blade is German steel and it shows. It slices clean, effortlessly, and somehow makes sharpening satisfying. Not once have I had a lead snap or a lopsided point. You get that iconic Blackwing long taper—elegant, sharp, and smooth to write with. No jagged edges, no over-sharpening, no wasted pencil. And the built-in canister? Game changer. No mess, no scrambling for a trash can mid-sketch or mid-note. It’s compact enough to carry in a bag, solid enough to survive it, and good enough that I now judge every other sharpener by its standard. If you’re dropping money on Blackwings and skipping this? You’re not getting the full Blackwing experience. Don’t be that person.
