Review: A Classic Children's Album from Carole King - I'm so happy to have this album on vinyl! I remember the special like yesterday when it first aired back in 1975 when I was a kid living in Gillette. Also I remember when a teacher from the school I attended in Morristown[whom I also had a crush on]had this album and what delighted me about this collection was that Carole King and children's author and illustrator Maurice Sendak collaborated on it plus the characters featured in this project were combined from two different stories. The title character[also voiced by King]stemmed from The Sign On Rosie's Door along with her friend Cathy and her pet cat Buttermilk while the Nutshell Kids[Johnny, Alligator, Pierre and Chicken Soup]had their own individual stories from the boxed story set The Nutshell Library. I loved Carole King's vocal renderings of the Nutshell stories-"One Was Johnny"; "Alligators All Around"; "Pierre" and, of course, "Chicken Soup With Rice", which were all featured on the first side! The title song kicks off the album and closes the album with a softer touch. In between "Pierre" and "Chicken Soup" are "Screaming And Yelling" and "The Ballad Of Chicken Soup". Side two, however, has filler songs which weren't included in the final film although later reworked in stage productions of Really Rosie[Tisha Campbell played the titled character in the original staged production!]. those songs are "Avenue P."; "Simple Humble Neighborhood"; "The Awful Truth" and "Such Sufferin'"[Gimme a Bufferin..]. The musicians featured here add their touch to the soundtrack apart from Carole King's vocals and keyboard work are Charles Larkey on bass, Andy Newmark on drums plus some uncredited guitar work[probably Danny Kortchmar]and horns and winds. I first had this on cassette in the late 80's, which repeated "Chicken Soup" on side 2 for filling up space but I later got the CD copy and spared the former to my place of employment in the children's library and not only that, my then boss spared me her VHS copy of the animated classic. I should've had this on vinyl back in the day but I'm glad I have it now and in great condition, too! Whether you're a fan of Carole King's music or Maurice Sendak's stories, I highly recommend this! I forgot to mention that King's daughters Sherry and Louise Goffin provide background vocals on here[Whom King had with former husband and collaborator Gerry Goffin].
Review: Wuality - Great album

I was given the LP version of this from my grandfather when I was 5. My grandfather sold records for Pickwick (which became RCA) back in the 70's. I loved the imagination of Carole King, the songs take you away to another place. Her voice makes the songs come to life. I always wanted my kids to experience this music too, but long ago I had gotten rid of the record. Now it is possible again!
