what is the quality of the cards

The card are in mint or near mint condition. There are Rares and foils in the group. I bought it before M15 and a large % was from the at the time current release, but I cannot say if this will include M15 now that it has been released. There was a good mix and I bought it for someone that was just starting out and they were able to make several decent decks out of the box.

How recent are these cards

When I purchased this pack I received cards going back as far as 1995 all the way to Shadows Over Innistrad and Eldritch Moon. Basically anything from any sets older than Kaladesh can be found in this. This pack makes a great backbone to a variety of decks but you will likely need some specific cards to bolster them.

Are there older cards in this lot?

There are few cards from the 90s sets, but I always found some in every box I purchased and they are in excellent condition.

Would this set be enough for me and a friend to play against each other as first time players, or is there a wiser way to start an initial collection?

As I do not remember how many land cards come with this it may be wiser to start off with a deck building kit from Walmart or any store that sells them. Also if there is a gaming store in your area that is licensed for Magic (wizards of the coast) then you should be able to get two decks for free. I think they are called starter decks but I could be wrong about that. The person at the counter should know. These decks will have land cards in them and are great for introducing someone to the game.
