## Description

“Superb. [A] first-rate narrative” ( The Wall Street Journal ) about the controversial construction of New York’s beloved original Penn Station and its tunnels, from the author of Eiffel's Tower and Urban Forests As bestselling books like Ron Chernow's Titan and David McCullough's The Great Bridge affirm, readers are fascinated with the grand personalities and schemes that populated New York at the close of the nineteenth century. Conquering Gotham re- creates the riveting struggle waged by the great Pennsylvania Railroad to build Penn Station and the monumental system of tunnels that would connect water-bound Manhattan to the rest of the continent by rail. Historian Jill Jonnes tells a ravishing tale of snarling plutocrats, engineering feats, and backroom politicking packed with the most colorful figures of Gilded Age New York. Conquering Gotham will be featured in an upcoming episdoe of PBS's American Experience.

Review: A great historical book about the Railroads 1900-1915 (and beyond) - The is a wonderful book about the making of the tunnels under the Hudson and East Rivers in the first decade of the 1900s. It also touches on the robber baron politics at the time, not unlike what we have today! The story of the methods, equipment, and men involved is very good.
Review: History of New York City's Pennsylvania Station - This work is a beautifully crafted history of the Pennsylvania Railroad's efforts to extend its tracks into New York City during the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuries. Relates all of the historical, technical, social, political and industrial issues, as well as people of the time, in a way that leads the reader into thinking that this is a good novel, in addition to a well-written history. When you realize that the old station no longer exists, the vision and work that went into its origins and construction take on greater meaning, especially in the jaded way we view the world today.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Testament to the industrial giants of the early 1900's
*by J***0 on December 27, 2013*

I never quite knew the history behind the tunnels and Penn station even after using it for years. After reading this book I was struck by the perseverance of the men who built the tunnels and Penn station. I also was sad that the magnificent original Penn station was lost to history. The hideous MSG building there now pales in comparison to the real Penn station. Great book, but what a shame it is that NYC lost an architectural gem.
