If any of the color cartridges run out, it will not print in black ink. Running out of red ink should not shut down a printer from printing in black but this is Epson's plan to force you to replace the color cartridge even if you don't need it at the time. Very poor design and I would never buy another Epson for that reason. **Q: does it scan both sides from ADF?** A: It does scan both sides from ADF, that's what I mainly bought this printer HOWEVER, please note that this printer can only scan one side of the document at a time, so for full duplex scanning it scans one side first, sucks back the document and flips it internally, and then automatically scans the other side. Because of that it takes longer to scan than my professional laser all-in-one printer (a lot more expensive) at work that does both side scanning at once and very fast. But for home/small business use this printer is great. For about the 1st year it did pretty good and didn’t have too many issues. After that almost every time it would be some kind of problem ie: connection to my computer or phone not working, or when using on WiFi it constantly loses connection so I needed to hardwire it, need to clean the printer heads, quality of the prints suck, paper jams, out of ink (because it uses so much ink). Then there is the fact that it constantly wants you to update, so Epson can update the printer so it knows what ink cartridges are not their brand. Their branded ink is extremely overpriced. When they say in the advertising that it is designed to work with Epson brand ink they mean it only works with their brand. It is really loud (like hear it 2 rooms away loud).
