I don't know if the problem came from the manufacturer or from sitting on the shelf too long, but the gel amount was low in several of the cups.

When in doubt, I follow directions? I was reluctant to purchase this item given all the bad experiences that other users have reviewed. That said, I did order this product and am very happy. A few tips and tricks: 1) Ensure you are taking a softwood cutting to propagate. Hardwood cuttings require a different type of propagation system. 2) Sterilize your cutting tools before taking cuttings (to minimize fungal and other contaminants which might effect your success rate.) 3) DO NOT add rooting hormone. The system already provides for this and additional hormone may actually kill your plant cutting. (The system appears to be a hydrogel of some sort - and apparently has its own rooting hormone already added.) 4) Add water to green catch basin. This will help the cuttings remain green and moist while waiting for roots to set (1-2 weeks or more.) 5) Keep domed cover on to keep humidity high (think greenhouse effect) - and check water levels frequently. 6) Keep out of direct sunlight - and keep plants from touching clear plastic as you're waiting for roots to set. Direct sunlight will bake your plants. Indirect sunlight (bright morning) may be best for your results. 7) Have fun checking your plants to see how they grow.

It is amazing how fast plants will root in this system. Also, you can root several cuttings in just one of the sealed containers which makes it great for using several times.
