would this work for a gold tone belt buckle?

I know it is great for aluminum and stainless metals, and other solid metals, such as brass. It would probably polish real gold and silver, as well, but I would be concerned about using it on a "gold tone" or other thin finish, as it may remove the finish.

Does anyone who uses Autosol have a suggestion of a very similar, cheaper US-brand that is *almost* as good?

Great question..The answer is "Yes" there are tons of inferior products out there, the shelves are full of them. A few of the brand names are "Snake Oil Plus" and a new one called "Super Turd Polish" not to mention an old time favorite "Spit and Polish" combined with "Extra Elbow Grease" to be quite ineffective as well. I have found them to all be *almost* as good, and so much cheaper!!
