Give the People What They Want

"Give the People What They Want," is, in a word, marvelous. Sharon Jones has an incredibly rich and noteworthy voice. She lays down tracks that sound like a cross between one of the best jazz bands you have ever heard, a soul group and a 1960's-style Motown group. There isn't a sour note to be found on this album, and every song on this album is strong."Retreat" -As she belts out the lyrics to "Retreat," Ms. Jones' voice is tinged with the enjoyment and satisfaction she would feel putting the man in his place. As incredible as her voice is, when she hits the high notes, she does so with class, her powerful voice fully supported by every musician's best friend, a strong diaphragm. (If you're not familiar with the reference, the diaphragm is the muscle below your lungs that allows you to project your voice) The saxophone countermelody and the echoing refrains of "Retreat" from the group add to the fun, giving the song a party atmosphere. The lyrics and the music make this a song of retribution "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." You have, indeed, been warned!"Stranger to My Happiness" starts out with sound effects that resemble the sounds you'd hear from an alien spaceship. A strong bass sax line starts up, and the song takes off. The "alien" sound effects and the frequent repetition of "mystery" create the illusion that the singer doesn't know or understand how this man has such strong power over her, making her do things that are against her better judgment.The song, "We Get Along" is a soft song with a strong message on the importance of trying to get along with other people. The message starts on a personal level, and is expanded out to the world at large with a touching verse about war.The rest of the album lives up to the high standards set by the first three songs on the album. Each song is interesting in its own right, and for different reasons. Don't hesitate. Just treat yourself buy this album. I did, and it's incredible!

Wow a friend introduced me to Sharon Jones and immediately I just fell in love with her voice and vitality. We went to see her and she blew me away. She is so complex in that she is old school, new school, soul, rnb, and just plain Sharon. The Dap Kings were awesome, and her backing singers are amazing. This lady is pushing 60 and has the energy of someone half her age and twice her height (she is less than 5 feet tall). She has this following of young people that is unique and one fan at her concert told me she had changed her life. She is that charismatic! I bought the vinyl and regular cd.

I was torn between giving this CD 4 or 5 stars, but in the end I realized that there simply were no weaknesses to be found on this album; no weak songs and certainly no lack of effort from the dynamic Sharon Jones. Simply put: this is sheer soul pleasure.If you've been a fan of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings' other fine albums --- and they are all worthwhile --- I think that getting this one qualifies as a no-brainer. You know what to expect and the songs don't disappoint. Songs with deep hooks, punctuated by the vibrant horn section, and Sharon's emotional vocals stirring the pot. Really, soul fans are lucky to have someone who shows their retro soul roots so proudly, and does it all so well.Sharon Jones and her band are first class all the way. If you are fan of the golden era of 1970s soul, or just like dynamic R&B music, don't miss this one.

I was listening to this modern day, slightly more sophisticated than previous efforts, big-city soul album by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. And at the same time I happened to be reading the informative new book, "Respect Yourself Stax Records And The Soul Explosion", by Robert Gordon. And I was struck by the notion that this wonderful, soulful, slinky album wasn't strictly out of the Motown mold. The vocals, the horns, the funky back-beat, even the mixture of races and genders--all reminded me that Stax too played a part in influencing this great band.Listen to "Get Up And Get Out" and you'll hear some of that famous Stax sound. And that's not the only song either. "Long Time, Wrong Time" has an arrangement (at least to my ears) straight out of Memphis and Stax Records. Listen to just about any good album from the era when Stax was pumping out great music, and you'll hear the same sort of sound and get that same kind of feel. And at the same time this band plays their music their way. They're not merely copying whats come before.Jones and her band have never taken their ears off their initial influences for their sound. They're this era's funky soul band. Listen to this album and then go back to their earlier albums and you'll hear that same dedication, that love of 60's soul and funk. Even with Jones' battle with ill health, her vocals have that wonderful soul filled sound and feel from the era when soul music was at it's peak. And the band--they've molded their sound into an almost seamless glove that wraps around Jones' vocals perfectly.And for further proof that this band is carrying on that tradition of the Motown/Stax sound, listen to "Slow Down, Love", a slow tune with great stuttering horns and a wonderfully relaxed, yet tell it like it is vocal from Jones. Like the best 60's soul--produced and played by a band of mixed races and genders--this band is simply one of the best (maybe the best) at what they do. Get this album. Now.And for some more great funky soul check out "Hipper Than Hip" by Tower Of Power, a 2 CD set recorded in their prime, live in the studio in 1974. One listen to "Squib Cakes" (among many others) and you'll understand what I mean. This East (S.F.) Bay band laid down some of the funkiest soul of the era. And live they were really soulful and funky. I count myself lucky that I heard them in The Bay area in 1971. Their horn section has a funky firepower all their own.

This lady can really sing. This is the most beautiful record ever. I urge you to get this it’s a great additive to a record collection. You’ll never find another singer like this lady.

My daughter introduced me to the music of Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Her sound is upbeat, old school yet brand new, and addicting. I love her voice, her background singers and the horns!!!! I have several of her cd's, this is my favorite. I would love to see her on tour!!! I recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys music that makes you want to dance!

I love love this CD Sharon Jones sings with the quality of Aretha Franklin.Her voice is soulful, bluesy. The dap kings are outstanding especially in the horn section. If you like to sit back and listen to good music and want to be brought back to the days when music was good then this is the CD for you. Makes me wish I was back in my 20's. I am now 52. Will definitely buy more of Sharon Jones and the dap kings music.

C'est si beau d'entendre ces chanson touchantes , et ce, même si je ne comprends pas les paroles , je suis ravi d'être dans cet univers .Je me vide la tête et je savoure ces instants de bonheur .La musique soul fait du bien à l'âme . Ce n'est pas agressif, c'est harmonieux, c'est bien composé, bien joué, bien chanté . Je suis heureux de découvrir Sharon Jones .

This is primarily a quick review of the vinyl version. I'm always appreciative of people leaving reviews about the vinyl pressing quality and sound quality, hence my short review.The vinyl pressing is very very quiet and even between tracks there's hardly any noise. I was concerned about ordering the vinyl as I'd never heard of Daptone records and thought they may have got the album pressed on the cheap. (I've also bought SoulTime by the same band and that pressing is great too). Another reviewer mentioned the fact that the band recorded on an 8 track and the sound lacked detail. I couldn't disagree more. The recording is very musical. It has dynamics and is not compressed at all, but it lacks any sort of harshness. This could possibly be confused with lack of detail.The treble may be a bit subdued compared to modern recordings but it sounds really nice, without any hardness or glare. The recording sounds very natural. All the detail is there but it is not in your face. You just need to sit back relax and listen. Even if you're doing something else you'll be tapping your feet.The brass section sounds smooth, and there's not a trace of sibilance in the lead singers voice or in the backing vocals.I'm not sure how expensive it is for a band to record using an 8 track, in comparison to recording digitally but I think other bands should look into it. What you lose in obvious detail you seem to gain in smoothness and musicality.The songs are great but they aren't going to change the music world. They're vintage and sound familiar in some ways. Sharon Jones has got a great voice.If you like old school soul I can't imagine why you wouldn't like this album.

Wer schon einmal Sharon Jones live erlebt hat, kann bestätigen, dass sie wie die weibliche Reinkarnation James Brownes wirkt, und unmittelbar, schwitzend, stampfend, laut und direkt ihre Songs zum besten gibt. Ihre Band, die Dap Kings, spielen dazu auf hohem Niveau auf. Wie gut die Band ist, kann jeder hören, der auch Amy Winehouses "Back in black"-Album zuhause hat, denn hier spielten die Dap Kings als Studioband die mittlerweile klassischen Winehouse-Tracks ein."Give the people what they want" bedeutet für Sharon-Jones-Fans im Jahr 2014, dass ihre Soul-Heldin ihre Krebserkrankung gut überstanden hat, und sie sich mit der direkt darauf folgenden Promotion-Tour und ihren Konzerten nicht zu schnell zu viel zumutet. Doch in den ersten Videos, die sie in amerikanischen TV-Shows zeigt, ist Jones trotz ihres neuen und krankheitsbedingten Glatzkopfes wieder voller Energie. "Give the people what they want" wurde eingespielt, bevor bei Sharon Jones Krebs diagnostiziert wurde. Somit lag das Album eine zeitlang auf Halde.Doch welch wohlfeine Soul-Perlen sind auf dem neuen Jones-Album enthalten?! Da gibt es den entspannten Bonus-Track "Make time, take time", der mit einer Querflöte ungewohnt instrumentalisiert wurde, oder das kraftvolle "Retreat!", das als Single ausgekoppelt wurde und mit einem Zeichentrickvideo (aus bekanntem Grund) aufwartet. Schade nur, dass die "Goldfinger"-Version aus dem neuen Scorsese-Film-Soundtrack nicht enthalten ist. (Hier haben Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings) übrigens auch einen Cameo-Auftritt!Wer auf enorm eingängigen, spitzenmäßig eingespielten Retro-Soul steht, kann bedenkenlos zugreifen. Verdiente fünf Sterne und von mir eine Kaufempfehlung. "Give the people what they want" läuft bei mir sicher noch lange in heavy rotation.
