How do you measure the dome to ensure the correct size?

I bought the 6mm power domes to replace the open domes I was wearing. The bottom opening of my open dome is just under 3/8" or 6mm. The power dome itself is a bit smaller, as it fits deeper inside the ear. Power domes are a big improvement for me.
