BLACK+DECKER 6-Cup Rice Cooker with Steaming Basket

So, my Black and Decker Handy Steamer from the 1990s finally stopped working after 30 years. I took pictures of the old and the new. Both made in China. Some differences are obvious! 1. The old one was larger - not an issue for me as I didn’t prepare anything large. However, the clear plastic cooking bowl made it easy to see how cooking was progressing. 2. The new one has a much shorter cord. I usually prepared everything, then moved the cooker to the top of the refrigerator. This freed up counter space :). So the new one will be an adjustment. 3. The new one has a feature to easily hang a hot lid on the side. Great improvement over lid juggling. 4. The old one has a convenient decal on the back with recommended times for various foods. 5. I had to measure everything with the old one, but the new one’s included cup and measuring lines for water should consign that to the dust bin of history. However, the water measurement lines are just pressed into the side of the cooking bowl, and they are hard to read if the light isn’t right. 6. Both user manuals include cooking time guidelines. The old one was far more comprehensive, with over eleven pages with times for various vegetables, et cetera, but the new one has about two pages. We’ll see. Made my first batch of rice tonight. Probably needs a bit more water. So far working as advertised. I will post a follow up review in 30 years…hoping it matches the longevity of the HS80!

If you like rice this item is for you. I have used it three times making flavored rice and each time the rice was done perfect. Put into the water and rice press start and when the rice is done it goes into warm mode. Very to use.

This replaced an old Black & Decker steamer which had the base holding the heater as the water container and a plastic upper section which was very spacious. I had to replace the older steamer because it started to leak. This new steamer is more compact, which is both good and bad. The design is improved as the heater is now seperate from the water container so leaking won't be an issue. So far I've used it only to reheat fresh but cold Char Su Bau (pork buns) from the grocery deli. It works well for that with one exception. The actual space for what you're steaming, if it is NOT rice, is very limited. 2 pork buns sort of fit but I have to crush down on the lid. I should have bought a larger one. Also note the instructions say do NOT use any kind of abrasive or pad on the water chamber/rice holder or you will damage the (non stick?) finish.

Nice and easy to use rice cooker. Clean easy design. Non-stick material keeps rice cooking softly with easy clean up. Small size is great for space -saving.

Was using this for over a year and it recently just stopped working. This was such a great start to teach my kids how to cook. But now im looking for a new one , mainly with stainless steel basket. I did notice over time the coating started to chip in the bowl to cook the rice. But it was very easy to use. I would have given it 5 stars if it would have made it to 2 years of use.

This has been great. It is the perfect size for one or two people. I generally do two meals at a time. i am transient right now and it is small enough to just in my suitcase. I use it for brown rice and quinoa. I've had no issues with the cooker or anything not being cooked properly,. Easy to clean, nothing sticks. I usually set to cook and come back way later and everything is coked and still warm, the warmer works great. I've never really paid any attention to cook time because I always set and forget but I do know it is faster than stove top and I don't have to babysit it.

This little wonder saves me so much time during meal prepping. It's also very simple to use. I follow the instructions and use the measuring cup provided, add the necessary level of water and in less then 20 minutes, I have perfectly cooked rice. I usually add a bit of olive oil and spices to my rice and it always turns out perfect. I use basmati (wash it first). Also very easy to wash. I use the sponge side to wash the inside by hand and avoid scratches. Highly recommended. I've had it on a deal ($30) a few months back.

Why would you sell an item in the UK that doesn't have a usable plug? I've even bought a specific Asia/US/AUS converter but it's a specific plug with one large prong than the other that doesn't even work with that. Why does the product say NOTHING about this in the description. What a waste of time. Can't even review it properly BECAUSE IT CAN'T BE USED

This was purchased as a low cost rice cooker to be used for a single person or a family of 2-3. It cooked 1.5 cups of raw rice in about 45 minutes. The unit goes into a "Keep warm" state automatically after the rice is cooked so you can start it ahead of time. I also own a larger Japanese branded rice cooker that costs about $150 more. This cooker has a few flaws. First. the markings on the rice pot is black on black and extremely difficult to see without shining a strong light directly on it. This is important because the amount of rice used is a critical factor in determining if the cook comes out too mushy or too dry/hard. My Japanese-branded rice cooker has more legible markings. Second, if you leave the rice in the pot on "Warm" for more than an hour, the rice that is in contact with the pot becomes hard and difficult to chew. This does not happen with my more expensive cooker. Lastly, while the rice pot is advertised as non-stick, rice does stick a little bit to it and it becomes harder to clean. Again, my more expensive rice cooker does not have this problem. Overall, given the price point, these are issues one can definitely live with.
