Does this work when battery is installed "in" the truck, or has been removed, or...both? I.e., can I charge battery "on the workbench"?

Yes you can charge your battery when it is installed in your truck or charge it when it is removed from the vehicle. Just don't start the engine when it is plugged in and charging.

In standby (trickle) mode, what is the maintained battery voltage? i need 13.5 to 13.8 vdc.

The Solar battery tender does not go into trickle mode , rather it is the voltage of the battery that triggers it to charge when the voltage go below specified value and stops at about 13.5 to 13.9 volts plus or minus a couple of volts. It is very accurate and any battery current draw will make it go on and stop when the charge is done. I have 4 of these and they are very dependable .To answer your question, yes it will maintain your battery to your specs.

I am looking for a smart charger. Is this a maintainer or a smart charger?

As far as I know, a charger senses a deficiency in the battery and fills it. When the battery is charged, it turns off. I have used this in a few vehicles and it is quiet and works great. It installs under the hood and can remain there indefinitely. I did use another for a spell and it made noise and seemed to run all the time. Hope this helps.........

How long would it take to charge a 12 volt battery?

in reality, these are used to keep a charge, not to charge a battery that has run down. lThey work real good as a trickal charger over long periods of time. I have not tried one on a dead battery.
