What’s the difference between steel and nickel track?

Nickel track is the color grey. Steel track is the color black.

Is this compatible with Kato track?

Don't think so.i stick with just one distributor

how do you make the track switch from one line to the other? Is there a button, or is it manual?

What kind did you buy??? If no wires, then you have to switch it by hand, but if it is electric, you should have a switch that you throw {push in} and then it will work.
