Can this grater be used WITHOUT THE STORAGE CONTAINER? Because I read several reviews about the slippery nature of the container while grating.

I have used it several times without the storage container. There is a rubber gasket around the base that keeps it in place when using it without the storage container. The rubber on mine is grippy.

can you grate going both ways? IE Up and down?

No. The metal is cut so that it only grates going down.
