I have a 3100 sq/f house and i want to install this unit.  Western Massachusetts, humid 87F average summer, dry and cold winters 20F. Will it work?

Here's how to tell how it will work for you in any situation or building: It is 40 CFM (cubic feet per minute). So a room 10x10x8 is 800 CF. 800/40 = 20. It would take 20 minutes to replace the air. So for 3100, if you have 8' ceilings, that is 24,800 CF. Divide by 40 = 620 minutes. Divide by 60 and that is 10 hours and 20 minutes for one complete exchange of air. I wish I had thought to figure it that way before I bought it and wen through the considerable effort of installing it. I wouldn't have. Oh well. I guess it's better than nothing. (1290 x 9 = 11,610 11,610/40 - 290. 290/60 = nearly 5 hours to refresh. And all of this is if you have PERFECT piping, short run, etc. The fact is you probably will have far less than 40 CFM because just the little flap that keeps bugs out reduces your CFM by 2-5 or so. I want to mount this in a wall. Can I mount this with the intake and exhaust going up instead of down as suggested in the instructions?

I need to know the answer to this too.  I am grade-on-slab, and I really need to mount this in the wall with the vents going UP, not DOWN.  Why can't I do this ?

What the btu/heat transfer efficiency of this unit?

Just to clarify a little since I wasn't sure on this at first.  The 66% ASE value describes the temperature transfer from outdoor air passing through the ERV to the air being exhausted.  The Total Recovery Efficiency of 36% relates to the enthalpy heat transfer with includes the latent (energy stored in water vapor) and energy used to run the fans and any other energy loss.  It is overly simplistic and misleading for Panasonic to say this is 66% for heating months and 36% in cooling months.

why does it shut down intake at 32 deg and can it be altered to a lower temp.

The damper shuts down at 32 degrees and cannot be altered because it prevents the core from freezing. If it were to get any colder you could ruin the core.
