Yes, you can use it as a single unit. I don't know how much weight it will carry but they are rated at 2200 lbs (100 KG). I believe any tree branch you hang these on would break long before these straps would snap.

Q: Can you use these directly on a live oak tree, or will the coarse bark rip them apart?

These type of connectors will girdle the limb and eventually cut off the vascular system. Locally we have a lawsuit over a limb with this type of connector killing a limb and falling on a child, killing him. The vascular system of a tree is in the outer layers, and when it gets cut off the limb dies. The proper way to attach a swing is to drill a hole through the limb and use eye bolts. The tree will scar over them and it won't hurt the tree. This kind of system is dangerous.
