I always struggle to find a unique gift for our family's Sneaky Santa game, so when I ran across this beautiful adult Lego set while browsing for young children's Duplo toys it grabbed my attention. This (along with a can of gourmet cheese ordered from WSU) will be my game gift this Christmas, as several of my family members enjoy puzzle and game nights. Of course this set isn't exactly a 3-D puzzle, although with almost 900 pieces I suppose it could be if one were ambitious and didn't look at the instructions! Hopefully whoever winds up with it and their spouse or gf/bf will enjoy an evening of fun while assembling it. When it arrived I was impressed by the rather sophisticated look of the box and the appearance of both the green and the pink interchangeable versions of the bonsai tree. This does not look like a toy. As so many reviews note, the completed build will make an attractive and rather unique display piece as well as being a relaxing and satisfying activity. I love the added touch of the little pink frogs! I even ordered another set for myself for later but haven't opened the box yet. I also discovered that Lego makes a large variety of similar sets intended for adults, and other similar sets that are not as complex for ages 7 or 8 years and up that don't look like the basic Lego toys. I ordered the smaller adult miniature orchid set and will make that one first. (The live orchids I'm gifted don't seem to thrive despite my best efforts so maybe this Lego orchid will!) Many of the project sets for ages 7 or 8 and up can construct a choice of three things. There are hummingbird and many other sets that make attractive displays, and according to reviews are enjoyed by adults. Edit: I have now made the little pink manual typewriter 3-in-1 and it's a cute, unique display which I enjoyed making. I mention these because I think these (some of the adult, or ages 7 or 8 and up) project-specific sets might be a good gift and welcomed activity for some senior adults and assisted living residents, depending on their abilities, as long as their eyesight is sufficient to see such small Lego pieces. (Unfortunately my older sister's eyesight isn't good enough, or I would give her the little pink typewriter set marked for ages 8 and up.) Kudos to Lego for making these lovely non-toy project sets that appeal to adults.

This LEGO bonsai tree was such an enjoyable build. I put it together with my siblings and family, and it brought back a lot of good memories for us. I bought this for my 8-year-old, even though the box is labeled for adults (18+). I was looking for something more "shelf-worthy" than the typical bright primary-colored sets, and the LEGO Botanical Collection really caught my eye. At under $50, the piece count (nearly 900) makes this an incredible value compared to other themed sets. The Build Experience Don't let the adult rating intimidate you if you have a practiced young builder. My son was able to handle 90% of the assembly solo. The Trunk: The "organic" look of the trunk is achieved with some really clever curved pieces. It’s a very satisfying part of the build. The Soil: Instead of a solid base, you pour loose 1x1 round tiles into the pot to act as "pebbles." It’s a unique tactile step, though just a heads-up: if you tip the tree over, you will be hunting for tiny "pebbles" in your carpet! Favorite Features Interchangeable Leaves: It comes with two full sets of foliage—classic green and pink cherry blossoms. Swapping them out is surprisingly fast and easy. The "Frog" Secret: My favorite detail is the pink cherry blossoms; when you look closely, they are actually tiny pink LEGO frogs. It’s a quirky, "very-LEGO" touch that my son thought was hilarious. Final Verdict This is one of the few sets that looks like a legitimate piece of home decor once finished. It’s sturdy, the wood-effect stand is elegant, and it provided about 3 hours of focused building time. For the price, it’s a steal for any LEGO fan, regardless of the age on the box.
