It is 35 1/2 from tip to handle but my husband put a rubber tip on the end for better walking support. It is very strong. As to using it for self defense, it is an umbrella!

Q: is it ok to use as a cane

I use my umbrellas as canes also. The shaft is sturdy enough and if you don't mind scratching up the metal tip, it functions well as a cane.
